I had heard from a neighboring business (Little Shadows Tattoos) that this place was the most authentic Mexican in Pittsburgh, and it surely did not disappoint. My wife and I were immediately cheerfully greeted upon entering the restaurant today for lunch. The initial feel of the restaurant was very ‘clean’ and welcoming. It was festive, brightly colored, and had a very cool vibe in the dining room. Good music too! Our staple for every Mexican restaurant visit is salsa (me) and guac (her) - they had 3 salsas, we were given 2 from the start. A mild and Smokey red salsa, and an incredible verde all made in house. (We were offered a sampling of the hotter salsa as well.) None of the 3 tasted the same and really had flavors all their own. Very good so far! The guacamole was super fresh and a bit different than most guacs we’ve tried, very tasty! My wife had the chicken quesadilla which was incredibly delicious and flavorful. It was so well crafted, she usually gets sour cream with everything Mexican, but failed to order it this time and went without. I’m a sucker for a good mole (was also recommended) so I went with the enchiladas - I asked for half mole, half green. Awesome! So good. Never had mole quite like this, unreal. When the mole got too rich, the green was bright and remarkable. The chicken for either of the dishes was very tender and not stringy like in some restaurants. My entree came with rice and beans as well. Never had beans like this - demolished those first. They were like a sauce and not too filling or bloating. Unfortunately most of the rice was the only thing left on my plate. Excited to go back for the nachos, plantains, and churros...
Read moreI believe this food truck is consistently in the Strip District, but today, I saw them near Inner Groove Brewing and decided to give them a try. Ordered the barbacoa burrito and churros. The wait time is decently quick and they give you buzzers so you know when the order is ready. This truck also has Mexican pop music playing, creating a great atmosphere.
I was originally hoping to try their tres leches cake, but they weren't serving it today. Next best dessert is the churro, so I tried them. Decent portion but the flavor was what really stood out. They we're still warm, hard a great crisp, and slight chewiness of the interior. They also have some chocolate and sugar drizzled around them. Definitely recommend them.
The barbacoa burrito was good, but had some flaws. The meat is absolutely delicious. So flavorful and cooked perfectly. I'd get a plate of just the meat and a side if I could. For $11, the portion is alright. Not too big or too small. In my opinion, they used too much lettuce. It was all jumbled together near the center, and just wasn't good. Rice was middle of the road, but well cooked. I thought there would be more cheese. Its just a few small pieces, and they don't add much flavor. Beans are tasty and seasoned well.
All in all, this place makes amazing meat. The burrito itself, though (rice and amount of lettuce) was good but not great. Churros are delicious. They may be out of some items and the price for the burrito (and other entrees) was $1 more than listed on...
Read moreOriginally from Arizona, Pittsburgh has been missing real Mexican food like this for a long time. At least in this area.
Back home, in the Southwest, you can get a burrito the size of a baby's leg. Stuffed with meat, cheese, beans and rice, and pico de gallo. Now we can eat those burritos here on Brownsville road.
Ordered it carne asada burrito. As expected, the thing weighed about a pound and a half. The steak was phenomenal. All the way down to the little gristly parts, just like back home.
There are a variety of meats here, and vegetarian options. Hopefully, next time they will have horchata. Will...
