My family and I went to The Speckled Egg SSW for breakfast. I made a reservation the night before as I had family in town and know that this location is often busy. After arriving we were promptly seated. Our waitress came over to take our drink orders and asked us if we needed a minute. We said yes, of course. The waitress then came back a literal minute later and asked if we knew what we wanted. We asked again for a minute, and again, the waitress was back at our table about 60 seconds later. At this point she appeared impatient. I decided to just pick something and give the rest of the table a little time to decide. I chose the very first option on the breakfast menu which required you to choose a protein. I asked "Do you have sausage?" The waitress quickly replied, no eye contact, while on her device "Yeah white, wheat, or sourdough?" Unsure if she had heard me I asked again "Do you have sausage?" She then stared directly at me, visibly annoyed, and said "Yeah, Im asking you about toast. White, Wheat or sourdough?" An awkward moment passed while she aggressivly stared at me. I completed my order and she then moved on to the rest of the table. When the food came, it was delivered by a kind young man and the food was perfect. I saw that the sausage was a sausage patty. Greasy food first thing in the morning upsets my stomach so I usually avoid sausage patties and opt for sausage links or something else altogether. Because of this I only had two eggs and toast for breakfast. Throughout breakfast our water was never refilled while we watched her pour water for the tables around us. After the table was cleared she asked if we needed anything else. I started to ask for the check when she interrupted me and asked someone else at the table if they wanted anything else, which they did not. No acknowledgement. I said again "I'll take the check when you have a chance." She glanced at me, gave a nod, then walked away. At this point the another person at my table stated "So rude". I still tipped 25% as everything else was very good. The food was cooked perfectly, the hosts were kind, and the young man who delivered our food was professional. I didn't want them to lose out because the waitress was short and unaccomadating to us. I understand how demanding restaurant work can be as I have also worked in that industry and other customer facing positions. It was hard for me to justify our experience as when we arrived about a third of the tables were empty and when we left about half of the tables were empty, all while being fully staffed. Love these restaurants but may think twice about coming to the SSW location again. At the very least I hope Maura F. can exercise a little bit more patience with people just...
Read moreMy Husband and I decided to stop here for lunch after moving to Pittsburgh .We ordered two coffees. He ordered the bagels and lox. I ordered the chicken and biscuit. After nursing our coffees and waiting 20 minutes or so for our food we started discussing if we should leave or not. I told him we should wait because we both are hungry. As I set facing the kitchen, I noticed one of the cooks eating on the line. I told my spouse maybe we should leave because of this reason more than the time. We called one of the waiters over to explain to him why we were leaving, he notified our waiter and proceeded to speak to the person who was eating in the kitchen. That discussion should’ve happened after we left because his coworker left the conversation, shaking his head and glaring at us. We paid for our coffee spoke to the host and exited the restaurant. I called the manager (Blue). I was told that he was busy and he would call back later. I waited 30 minutes and called again. This time I spoke with him to explain why we left his restaurant. He came up with the excuse that some people that work in open kitchens don’t realize that they’re on stage. That excuse bothered me and he said I was being argumentative. If I were argumentative, I apologize, it just sadden me that he came up with that excuse. What it did for me is made the whole experience make sense. He did refund us for our coffee but that is not why I called. It was about our experience in his restaurant. His excuse made it all make sense.
Signed, Argumentative...
Read moreMy husband and I reserved a table for Sunday morning at 11:45 and it was packed almost to capacity. The countertop and bar seatings were pretty much all open though. We got there on time and, while we weren't expecting to be seated right away, we had to wait 15 minutes. There were many people waiting and I'm not sure if they give priority to the ones with reservations or not. It wasn't a big deal. I'd probably just show up and sit at the bar or counter tops if you don't mind these options. The host and servers were very nice and the service gets 5 stars. They were polite, professional, and quick. The food on the other hand was not up to par. The sandwich with 2 eggs and a couple of pieces of bacon was very small, no sides for $13. The shrimp and crab roll, for $18, was bigger, the butter roll was very good but the shrimp and crab salad didn't have much flavor. Again no side; I some greens with dressing could even be enough and definitely make the presentation a bit better. The cappuccino and Americano were very good. I think I had higher expectations because the Speckled egg is mentioned often on Internet as one of the best places for brunch but, while it was good and our experience was overall ok, I am not sure I can say that it was one of the best I've had. The location is great though and convenient and they have outdoor tables in summer where you can sit with your puppy so maybe we'll come back later in the year to enjoy the...
