Dallas Foodie Adventure: Mexican Sugar

A well constructed upscale Mexican restaurant for everyone. My first time dining at Mexican Sugar and I have lots to say. Let's first talk about the interior design. I have not been to Mexico yet but I sure felt like I was there. Exquisite architecture, from the walls to the tables and to the chairs. I felt like I was dining in the home of Marc Anthony. Covered patio seating is available with lots of room and it was such a nice day today. I don't drink much but their drink menu offers unique thirst quenchers; decorated with flowers and touched with citrus. I sat at the bar and was immediately given a menu. Compliments to the bartender gentleman working tirelessly to make drinks for the hundred plus people in the restaurant. I tip my hat to you sir. Let's talk food. For appetizer I ordered the marinated shrimp. Poached diligently leaving great texture to the shrimp. The avocado was a nice touch to blend the taste of the shrimp with the citrus marination. Topped with fried yuca. Light, crunchy, and seasoned well. I recommend ordering this appetizer. Complimentary chips and salsa are given. Their salsa is not like your Mi Cocina, Gloria's, or Chuy's. Their salsa has a robust flavor. You can taste the fullness and round body of the salsa. Very different than other restaurants whose salsa has a watery element to it and the taste falls through. For entree' I ordered the Angus Skirt Steak plate. Plate presentation was on point, clean and sharp. The plating portions are very different than other Mexican restaurants, which I like. The first thing I noticed on this plate was that there was more meat than rice. Usually at other restaurants, that ratio is reversed. Well done Mexican Sugar. The steak, cooked to perfection and explodes with that adobo marination flavor. Bold, juicy, and tender. The salsa verde pairs nicely with the steak. Boldness to mellow, back to bold. The cilantro rice has just the right amount of cilantro and packs a citrus punch that I was not expecting. I was happily surprised. Let's not forget about the pickled red onions on top. Tasteful vinegary flavor, gives the whole dish another level of freshness. If I had to point out one critique about this dish it would be the green beans. Seasoned well but they were a bit too crunchy for my liking. 1-2 more minutes of cooking time and they would have been perfect. Dessert. They don't have a dessert menu but I did find out that they have desserts. They have a chocolate cake, tres leches cake, and churros. I ordered the churros. You can tell they are homemade churros with each churro holding its own unique structure. Overall, my dining experience at Mexican Sugar was outstanding. Welcoming atmosphere, great energy in the air, love the interior design, amazing food...and of course, the mariachi band. Thanks for pouring your Mexican Sugar on me.

Walking in this restaurant looks beautiful. The ambiance is amazing. From the bar to the tables. We arrived exactly at our reservation time which was 2:15 pm. We were welcomed by a very engaging and nice hostess. Dirty brown hair if I remember. She did great and she seated us very professionally. That is when the great experience ended. We waited for a decent amount of time before we were greeted. We are pretty patient individuals and by the time we were greeted we were thirsty. We ordered 2 waters, 2 mimosas, a tuna crudo, and some entrees. We waited for our cocktails are were excited to have a day together. The mimosa came about 5 minutes later. When they arrive we asked the server whom brought them if we could also get the waters we ordered. He said yes of course and then left. The mimosa's tasted like Cheap prosecco and sunny D mixed. Not a great start to such a lovely place. About 5 minutes later our crudo came out. Very earthy recipe. I personally didn't like it but It may just be different that the usual Tuna Crudo I am used to. It is not light and citrusy. The individual who ran the food asked if we needed anything and I of course asked for my waters than never arrived. So we are sitting there with two mimosa's, chips and salsa, and the crudo. We move the crudo aside because we didn't care for it. The server comes back almost 10 minutes later asks us if we need anything. We of course really just want our waters. I ask him again for the waters and he took the order for the waters like it was the 1st time I had mentioned them! He left and returned about 5 minutes later with the waters. I looked at my phone and they arrived at 2:46 pm. Thats 30 minutes after we sat down! On the 4th try and with 3 different employees. Is water scarce in Plano? We tried to order bottled water but there was none available. I would have paid if they arrived quicker. So we get our waters and the entrees arrive. The entrees were great. We began to have a better experience since we had everything we needed at the time. We enjoyed the entrees talked about how great they were. After the entrees were done the waiter came by and cleared the appetizer and the entrees at the same time. I ordered a Tres Leches, Churros, and coffee. He offered a French press coffee and I was excited since You normally don't see those in restaurants. The Desserts came out and they were average. The Tres Leches was dry from the middle up and didn't have a good flavor. The Churros were good but you really dont see much difference in " Churros". So after we had finished Dessert we of course are waiting on the coffee, (which we wanted with dessert). We continued waiting. Our server brought the check with the coffee on it and of course we informed him that We didn't get it. I tried to hand him my card to pay. We really just wanted to leave after this bottom barrel experience. He insisted on making coffee togo and did not listen to a word I said. He removed the coffee from the check and paid us out. We left as soon as we can. I was surprised to see that after this horrible experience that my reservation was changed to cancelled after we had paid out. I am almost certain this was deliberate because they want to keep their Open Table score high. Most restaurants cancel reservations 15 mins after their reservation time not 1 1/2 hrs later. A Male manager did his "table Touch" and asked us if we needed anything. The one moment that we had everything. I wanted to use the private message function of Open table but sadly that wasn't an option given to me.

While out and about we thought it would be great to have dinner somewhere new. We had talked about Mexican Sugar before but never decided to give them a try. We had been told it's "clicky" at the Legacy East location (whatever that means) and was overpriced with cramped seating inside. Wow, we were given extremely biased information which we found to be totally incorrect! From the moment we walked through the door we were impressed. The restaurant's sprawling interior can easially accomodate very large crowds. The decor is spectacular and appears to be period correct. No smoke and mirrors but very informative staff who will take care of you like youre in their home. We enjoyed different signature cocktails that were delicious. That's because our bartender took an extra three seconds to ask us what sounded good to us and what we usually enjoy by way of cocktails. She made recommendations that were delicious. We enjoyed a bowl of delicious queso along with their signature flour tortillas. The main event of our dinner was the chicken fajitas. First thing I noticed were how they were cut, they were breasts cut at a 90 degree angle. This gave us a new expenience because the chicken had a perfect sear with a light crisp along the cut line making every bite the same as before. We've tried nearly all reputable well reviewed mexican restaurants over the years and we've been back to visit Mexican Sugar Plano many times. Their cocktails are carefully crafted, from intricate built to serve beverages to an amazing swirl margarita. Must admit though, Mexican Sugar's Churros were an over the top treat we couldn't get enough of. Warm, crisp exterior with a soft interior served up with four deliciously paired dipping sauces. Everytime we visit, it's a win, great food served up be incredible staff that care and actively listen to communicate with their guests.

A Rocky Start Turned Royal Treatment: Our Evening at Mexican Sugar on 4/13/24! Dining at Mexican Sugar in Plano was an experience that started with a stumble but ended in a triumph fit for royalty. Upon arrival, we were met with less than stellar service from our assigned server, whose disinterest was palpable. However, rather than letting this sour our evening, we took the initiative to address our concerns with one of the managers. What followed was a candid conversation that transformed our experience entirely. From that moment on, we were treated like absolute royalty. We had reserved a table for my niece and her friend, who were preparing for prom night and deserved nothing but the best. And Mexican Sugar delivered just that. The service post-conversation was nothing short of exceptional. We were checked on frequently, our glasses never emptied for long, and we were even treated to a delightful lesson on the origins of the tequila we were enjoying. It was evident that the staff went above and beyond to ensure our evening was nothing short of extraordinary. And let's talk about the food. Every dish that graced our table was a masterpiece of flavor and presentation. From the vibrant appetizers to the delicious fajitas, each bite was a testament to the skill of the kitchen staff. But what truly stood out was the genuine care and attention we received throughout the entire meal. It was clear that the team at Mexican Sugar was committed to turning our experience around, and they did so with flying colors. If you find yourself in Plano craving an unforgettable dining experience, look no further than Mexican Sugar. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for exceptional cuisine and service, this restaurant delivers in every aspect. Highly recommended, without a doubt.

The chocolate avocado cake is every bit as good as they say! I didn't know how well I was going to handle the ancho spiced chocolate cake but I thought it was perfect. Remember back in the days when we were elementary school students and how much we looked forward to chocolate cake day in the cafeteria? This is the grown-up version and 100x more awesome. The double layer cake with cinnamon meringue and avocado mousse with the creme anglaise just married so well together. When I first heard about the cake I definitely thought it was a weird combination of flavors but the chocolate, cinnamon, and avocado just WORKED. I loved the cinnamon and thought it was a super refreshing addition to the decadent goodness of the chocolate cake. I've always liked tres leches but the main reason I have been meaning to check out Mexican Sugar was because I heard they had a cinco leches cake, however, I must have waited too long to try them out (I've had them bookmarked for 5 years) because when I went, it was just a tres leches cake. It was still delicious though! My friend is a tres leches cake lover and thought it was pretty bomb. Now that I've gushed about the desserts... The seafood paella though... You know I like something when I CLEAN my plate. Mexican Sugar has some influences from Spain so I was excited to try out their version of the paella. All the seafood tasted so fresh. The scallops were awesome and cooked perfectly. I usually don't like peas but I didn't even mind them in this dish. Awesome blend of flavors and the texture of the rice was on point. Loved the paella!
