Honest review: I fully went here thinking it was Jimmy's, as I don't eat in this area often, but I really enjoyed my experience with Smokin.
Order: Big boss burger with fries and a mango lassi.
Pros: The burger was easily one of the best I've had in DFW, even amongst much more expensive places. To give you an idea without turning this into a food blog: it's been 24 hours and I'm still thinking about it. The brother at the front was incredibly kind, and service was quick and easy. The lassi was sweet and refreshing without tasting like pure sugar. Would highly recommend but I think it might have been a weekend special? Whole place was very clean.
Cons: The fries were pretty average, not bad but not all that exciting either. I'd have liked to maybe have a seasoned fries option or something similar. The location is still pretty new so the interior is lacking in terms of furnishings or decoration. I'd say for now it is definitely a place you go to for the food rather than the ambiance.
Notes: My initial impression based on the menu was that it was very pricy, even for halal. However, the burger was absolutely massive, and for the amount of food I received I'd say it is comparably priced to other halal food joints. If you've got an appetite I wouldn't be worried; the big boss had me looking for a place to nap afterwards. I'd probably recommend the regular boss burger if you plan on retaining any sort of function afterwards.
All in all, my experience was fantastic. I'll be coming again when I'm in the area to try the philly cheesesteak and some of...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI went in with 2 Muslim brothers. Apparently the place is still in its honeymoon. They still have their Grand Opening sign up. I check out the menu and decide to go with a single patty cheeseburger. It was pretty good. Nothing to fall out about. But, it was Zabihah Halal so that was the biggest upside.
I gave the low rating due to what I felt was sketchy service. The owner, apparently, is a Muslim from Pakistan. We came in as 2 Black American Muslims and 1 Burmese Muslim. We tried to jibe with the brother but he seemed a bit stand offish. He certainly didn't seem to be happy to have us as customers in his brand new establishment. What's wrong with people. Or what's wrong with Black Americans. Even in this post modern world people still give us the cold shoulder. Even when we're shopping with them or spending our money to support their efforts. It's frustrating.
The place had a good vibe and I can only imagine that if the business picks up it will be considered a hidden jewel. They also had a display with pamphlets, English and Spanish translations of the Quran for people who might be interested in Islam.
So that's it. Check it out if you like. If you're looking for the best BBQ in the area, I've had better in this area and I've only been around here for a couple of weeks. In that case you...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreDon't understand why the previous marquee sign has been retained for nearly a year. The low budget operation with only one serving staff member is unacceptable for dine-in. Asking customers to use a rationed plastic fork to dive into Australian Wagyu A5 is an insult, simply because the majority of the customers do not have dietary restrictions on utensils.
Competing with flies while dining in is also unacceptable.
The Wagyu and Rib Eye were done correctly to order, but the Brisket was not (the ring was missing in action) capable of passing entry in any backyard judging competition.
There are other cuisines (Lamb "Shang" - the typo, supposedly, is not cast in concrete but management cannot be bothered to correct it, but they have done so selectively with other menu items) too where this place may excel but given the unsatisfactory service a return visit is unlikely.
This place has the mindset of a fast food joint, but the prices are for silver spoon service. This business model can only survive with a captive...
