This review is for any other vegans out there who will be ordering the new vegan cheese option on the pizzas. I want to start off by saying that I adore Cappo's. Their crust is some of the best and their Mediterranean pizza is a genius combination. I'm not local, but my friend lives a few blocks away. Whenever I would visit her, I had been ordering the take and bake option with no cheese and placing vegan cheese on it myself, but stopped as it ended up being too much work to try to figure out how to cook it just right. Then, I was super excited when my friend told me they added vegan cheese as an option. I immediately ordered a Mediterranean pizza with vegan cheese at a surcharge of $7 which though pricy, is well worth it as it would be cooked to perfection and I could have something to eat at my friend's house. When I got the pizza, it looked so good that I had a piece in the car as I could not wait. However, something tasted a little off. I did not immediately put together what had happened. When I got to her house and could look in the light, I realized the feta cheese looked suspiciously like real cheese. But, I know many new products look like the real thing and didn't question it. After all, I had paid for vegan cheese. The Mediterranean pizza has both mozzarella and feta. The mozzarella was obviously vegan. However, the feta was underneath which made it harder to tell if it was vegan. I figured it was fine and didn't want to make a scene at her house. After about an hour, I started not to feel right. I went vegan not only for moral reasons but also my health. Dairy is extremely inflammatory. Anyways, I asked a few of my friends if they thought this could be real cheese on accident. I had them taste it but no one could tell for sure, again, a lot of these mock products taste real. But, I stopped eating it and decided to contact Cappo's. When I finally was able to speak to a manager, I found out that alas I had eaten real feta cheese. Apparently, the way to order this is to mark vegan cheese and also say no feta cheese. Otherwise, they will put vegan mozzarella on and then add real dairy feta cheese too. Big disappointment. I wish that would have somehow been indicated? Now, I spent $30 for a pizza which would have been fabulous otherwise. Had to toss out the rest and now have to live with the guilt that I accidentally ate cheese. If you are vegan, you know. In any case, I do believe this was an honest mistake as it's new to their menu. I do hope this review calls attention to this needing to be marked on their website and ordering system. And, I really don't want some other unsuspecting vegan or someone with a severe cheese allergy to accidentally make the same error I did.
As of 12/29/23, Cappo's made a notation on their ordering system and website to notate that only the Mozzarella is vegan. Thank you!! Got one today and most of it is gone because it wound up in my stomach before I had the chance to take a picture. Absolutely perfect! Thank you Cappo's. I adjusted to 4 instead of 3 stars. It would be 5 had they offered to remake the other pizza again for me at no cost. Second picture is the one that doesn't have...
Read moreFirst of all, the name Cappo's is deceiving. I walked in thinking it was an Italian restaurant and was immediately disappointed when I looked at the appetizers. No bruschetta, bread with oil and parmesan, antipasto, not even minestrone soup. The 2 soups they did have were cream of potato, one with sausage and the other with cheese, I think. We ended up having the friend veggies with mushrooms, green beans and onion rings. No complaints, but it's really hard to mess up friend veggies. The wasabi dipping sauce and ranch dressing were really good. My wife had a chicken Caesar salad, which was anything but traditional. I was really surprised when I saw black olives and red onions, but she said it was in the menu and ok with her. The croutons were uneatable, rock hard. The pasta selection was very basic. Lasagna, spaghetti, alfredo, eggplant parmesan, etc. With the name Cappo's I was expecting gnocchi, different ravioli, vodka cream sauce, maybe a create you own pasta dish. I ended up with the Stromboli. I would challenge the chef to look up Stromboli and justify what they call Stromboli. It was basically pizza bread. It wasn't awful, but definitely not what I expected. Service was OK, but nothing I would review as exceptional. I give it 3 stars because we ordered a couple carryout pizzas a while back and it was OK, but nothing memorable. I will be going back, but not with the notion of an Italian restaurant in mind. The prices were very reasonable, which is another reason for a 2nd visit. Just please make an...
