In fourth place was Baerlic Beer Company. A late contender on our Instagram users chosen “must visit” list but a welcomed addition for sure. We almost skipped Baerlic until more locals than not told us it was a must hit. Baerlic did not disappoint.
The two best brews on the flight were the Punk Rock Time California style IPA and the Woodworker Perpetual Astonishment barleywine. The California IPA was developed with hop heads in mind. The 6.2% IPA was generously dry hopped with Amarillo, Strata and Chinook hops. Most of the notes were citrus because of the Amarillo and Strata, but there was also a nice piney flavor with the Chinook addition.
While not the most massive barleywine we’ve had over the years, the 9.8% Woodworker Perpetual Astonishment had bold coffee, cocoa and vanilla flavors. Some purists would scorn the adjunct barleywine, but the traditional caramel and toffee notes were well supplemented by the coffee and...
Read moreGood pizza, excellent beer, amazing breadsticks, but the so-called "Caesar salad" is an abomination. Entirely made of radicchio, which looks like thick red cabbage, favored by restaurants that are trying too hard to seem sophisticated. Most don't use it as the sole leafy ingredient, however; it's an accent.
The very good dressing does not cover up the taste and texture of extremely bitter livestock roughage and I could not eat it. My companions were as surprised as I was and came up with many creative suggestions, as none of them wanted it either after trying a few bites out of curiosity.
They also hand you your beverage at the cash register 20 minutes before your order is ready, which will not be cold if you want it with your meal.
Order at the counter, wait for the beeper to go off, very little service beyond that.

Read moreNew small brewery opened up in SE Ladd neighborhood, inside the old Kettleman Bagel Company (next to Blitz Ladd.) Started by award winning home brewers, Baerlic (pronounced "bear-lick") offers 10 beers on tap, ranging from the lighter USA (Ultra Summer Ale) and Invincible IPA (my favorite), to the darker Primeval Brown and Noble Stout. Few tables inside, so have a seat at the bar or at the sidewalk tables outside and grab a pint(s) or taster tray, and growlers also available to go. No food offered at Baerlic but outside food is allowed and encouraged, so I'd recommended bringing something with you before you stop in. The brewers are usually always around, so ask for a tour of the brewery! (Saturday is probably the best day.) Happy Hour available everyday 5-7pm and all day on Tuesday. Come by and support new up-and coming-...
