Went here on a whim because my girlfriend and I wanted to go out on a Sunday night and most places were closed near us. Now we go a bit out of the way to come here because we love it so much.
Small menu, only three or four items and a couple appetizers and I think this place gets the idea that your better off having only a few AMAZING food items, rather than 50 mediocre ones because everything they have is so delicious. It's nice to see such thought and quality put into affordable prices instead of just reheating day after day. The ramen was creamy, flavorful and packed with delicious things and the rice bowl with soy curls melted in our mouths.
They have I think four beers on tap if your interested, all four were delicious and they even had a stout and a red, rather than just four different IPA's (thank god). Big menu of specialty cocktails that'll keep you busy for awhile. Of the three cocktails I had, all were top notch.
All the times I've been here were at night and I have to say the ambiance is phenomenal. The inside was cozy with dim lighting, plants hanging from literally everywhere, and nice unobtrusive background music. Outside is just as nice with lots of benches and tables and a covered section with heaters in case it rains or gets a bit chilly.
I really can't say enough good things about this place, definitely top 10 places I've found in...
Read moreSome reviews have a story, and this is a good one... I drove from Seattle to Portland to give a presentation about mortgage financing for home renovation. Weather was bad, so the three hours drive took much longer. I found this place on Google and with such good reviews, and even though there's a Subway just down the street from my AirB&B, I decided to walk there 15 minutes. In the rain. The Pork Belly Bahn Mi was well worth the walk. The Pork Belly was well roasted & rendered, loaded with everything needed to make the perfectly tasted, crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, baguette - the perfect sandwich I was looking for. Yes, I've had better ones, but no points deducted! Paired grate with the Pilsner draft, and the Mrs. Doubtfire tape playing in the background (which developed into a conversation about Mork & Mindy, the terrible human disease Mork discovered, called loneliness, and the role of places like the Double Dragon in curing it). Walking back to the Airbnb was a different story. A long train was parked, blocking my way... After almost 20 minutes in the freezing rain, I walked back to the bar - if you're there in a cold winter night, I highly recommend asking for a scooch of whiskey. Got my blood flowing again, enough to make it back home. (Turns out there's a bridge over the train tracks, just 2 blocks down on 14th -...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I ate at Double Dragon earlier today during lunch time. The brand feel, recipes and atmosphere were good, but the kitchen execution and service was poor.
I ordered the brussel sprouts and pork belly rice bowl. The brussel sprouts were burnt to a crisp, which ruined the flavor of what otherwise would have been tantalizing. The rice in the belly bowl was mushy/overcooked/old?, but was otherwise delicious. After inquiring, it turns out they don't have any sauces to enhance the meal beyond sriracha.
Our bartender/server (longish blond hair, skinny, interesting eyes) was unattentive and insulting. He never told us his name, even after we introduced ourselves. After he delivered the food he waited until we were finished eating to ask about quality. After we casually provided feedback (that I hope was constructive/not ego stripping), he said "well that's nice of you to choke it all down" in reference to the fact that we ate it all despite our concerns. He never made any attempt to remediate. This is the only negative restaurant experience we have had in Portland yet. What a guy.
In all, this may be a one-off situation, but we were really disappointed seeing as how our place is so close (
