Nondescript white shack with lots of parking, when i walked in I was the only non-Asian person there and the occupied tables were LOUD. Tells me they’re comfortable there, good sign.
Full Chinese-American menu, as someone else said not Panda Express American, but not “head still attached” authentic. I got the lunch special, ever in search of the perfect General Tso—crispy and sweet, fully fried but not overfried with dark brown overcarmelized corners, spicy but not overwhelming, and somehow not super heavy tasting in good thick sauce.
This was it. Best I’ve had since leaving Richmond VA 17 years ago. So light and crisp and the chicken was fresh and juicy inside. A Powell Blvd miracle!
Didn’t try anything else, but if you can walk that General Tso tightrope then everything else is comparatively easy IMO. A steal for lunch at $7.60 with soup (she brought me a hot and sour with giant tofu chunks and pleasantly sour, not bordering on rancid like most...
Read moreWe got the Hong Kong style vegetables and the Shredded Duck soup. It was delicious comfort food. I'm not Chinese so I can't claim direct knowledge of these things, but these dishes seemed to have more homestyle cooking to them that went beyond standard americanized takeout food. The vegetables were varied (with wood ear, lotus root, and tofu skins!) and the sauce had a lot of flavor and great consistency. The soup was textured and wholesome. It scratched the "takeout" itch while still having fresh and varied flavors that went beyond the standard takeout overly sweet gloppiness. I will definitely be coming back again and can't wait to try more dishes-- I think I've found the Chinese food experience I've been searching for in Portland. The only problem I had was the veg sauce was on the saltier side, but this wasn't a big issue because it's meant to be eaten with rice anyway and might just be a...
Read moreJust, eh. Not worth what they charge you. Food was just okay and our order was definitely wrong. We ordered 1 entree, 1 soup (got 2) and 1 order of cream cheese wontons (we got fried plain wontons even though I confimed over the phone and she repeated it). Cashier didn't understand but we were tired and hungry, and didn't press it. Should have been $22-25 based on their website but was charged $37. The cashier ignored us until our order was ready and then snapped her fingers at us when it was up. It was very clear that there was two of us and we only got one fork and one spoon. The pineapple and ginger chicken had lots of veggies but barely any pineapples. Chicken was tough and sauce was okay. Not only was the service subpar, the food wasn't great either. First food stop in Oregon and so...
