Updated 9/2025: No idea what happened here but this place is horrible. The "two meats and three veggies" is a joke - the menu won't state it, but you can only choose from three options, not the full menu. Asked for a Harar beer and was told they didn't have it. Funny enough, a party arriving after me also asked for Harar and got some. The St. George beer I did get was basically colored water and foul. The missir wot was lacking niter kibbeh and the gored was absolutely devoid of spice with the exception of garlic. Gored gored meat had the consistency of fat pieces and had a weird eucalyptus flavor. When this place was at its old location it was incredibly good. Now, I will not be back and definitely recommend against going here. Sad.
Original review 2/2025: Wonderful and warm! From incredibly delicious food to gracious, attentive staff, this place is everything I could hope for in an Ethiopian restaurant. Note that food is made to order some of the time, and if so expect a slight wait, but know it is definitely worth it. The misir wot was delicious and the fir fir was spot on, with chewy meat chunks to complement the seasoned injera. Love the unrushed atmosphere and overall layout (restroom is easily accessible to wash your hands before and after eating). Can't wait to visit again next time I'm...
Read moreEach one of their dishes are impeccable. This is among the best Ethiopian food I've ever had. I grew up near Fairfax Avenue in LA, where we had our pick of 8 or 9 Ethiopian restaurants in a row. I tried them all, and had my favorites for different things. And I tried at least six places in DC and NYC. I've had Ethiopian food as far away as Adelaide. (Shout out to the Addis Ababa Cafe there). As far as flavor profiles and quality dishes, Gebeta is very close to the top two or three I've experienced the country, and fantastic for Portland. I originally learned about Gebeta when it was located near the airport, before it moved to the new location on Alberta. I asked an Ethiopian Lyft driver what he thought was the best restaurant in Portland for Doro Wat. He was unequivocal. This place does not disappoint! I only hope they don't change anything now that they are in a more expensive location. Every other place takes Doro Wat out of their combinations once they become popular. Please keep the food the same and we will keep...
Read moreGebeta Ethiopian Bar and Restaurant is everything we happen to like a local dining experience: casual atmosphere with really good food. In case you don't know, Ethiopian food is eaten with the hands via soft injera 'bread'. We're not Ethiopian, and I'm sure we looked pretty funny, but we felt accepted and comfortable. We enjoyed hearing local folk visiting at their tables, eating big platters of authentic Ethiopian food. We had our favorite, Doro Wat (spicy chicken and egg stew) and Alicha Wat (beef/vegetable stew). The atmosphere isn't fancy and they don't have iced tea but I'm giving them 5 stars because it's their restaurant and we think restaurant owners who have things the way they like them should be reviewed based on their standards, not our own. I'm glad there wasn't loud music. We like the basic tables an chairs. I can't help but wish they offered hot towels for hand washing :) but we did fine. Very relaxing atmosphere and pleasant with excellent...
