Visited: Friday 7/21/2025, Hanoi Kitchen – Portland, OR

New Business Hours posted on front door (as of March 2025, posted on their website): Friday to Monday: 10:00 AM–3:00 PM, reopen 5:00 PM–8:00 PM Closed: Tuesday–Thursday

This summer’s obsession for bánh cuốn brought me back to PDX after a weekend in Westminster and Garden Grove, CA. I finally gave Hanoi Kitchen a go even though I’ve driven past them for 4 years.

I called ahead around noon to ask if they could set aside a bánh cuốn for dinner. They confirmed they only make a limited batch in the morning and reheat per order, but assured me the texture would still be soft, not chewy.

We came in at 6:15 PM as a party of 3. Only one dine-in customer was finishing up and two to-go orders were picked up during our meal.

What we ordered: -1 Bánh Cuốn ($14) -Combo A – Cá Bông Lau Kho Tộ & Canh Chua Tôm ($18) -Combo B – Sườn Ram Me & Canh Khoai Tây ($18) -1 Cà Phê Sữa Đá ($7) -1 dozen Organic Eggs ($6) Total: $64

Food Notes: -Bánh cuốn was soft as promised. The chả lụa texture was softer than I like, and the fish sauce was just okay. I will continue my quest for Bánh Cuốn or until the obsession wears off. -Combo A: The catfish fillet (skinless, unlike the traditional round cut bone-in with skin) was decent for the sauce but lack deep as expected. The soup had sprouts, pineapple, Thai chili, and bạc hà (though replaced with celery). Flavor was light and lacked the depth we’re used to. -Combo B: Tamarind pork was well-balanced, but the canh khoai tây would’ve been better with short ribs or bone-in cuts instead of straight chewy pork meat. -Coffee was slow-dripped as ordered because they told us so. Standard taste, though I prefer a stronger brew and a better coffee-to-condensed-milk ratio. -The dozen organic eggs were pre-packed and stored in the fridge, which I appreciated.

Other Details: -Street parking available along NE Glisan, plus a private lot in back. -Decor is dated, inside and out. The neighborhood feels a bit rough, which may explain the limited hours. -Toilet seat covers were out in the ladies’ room, so I took one from the men’s room since we were the only customers at the time.

Overall: A quiet, family-run spot that really does feel like eating in someone’s home. You can hear your food being cooked in the kitchen. The meal satisfied our cravings for comfort Vietnamese dishes without having to cook. We’ll return for the same dishes next time the...

Ordered takeout last night and meant to take pics but everything was too good we just dove in!

In the shop the employees were so kind and friendly. They were clearly slammed as their restaurant had been promoted via meme on Instagram all day yesterday due to recent vandalism. That didn’t stop them from being sweet and kind to everyone who came in or called. You rarely see restaurant staff handle such pressure with calm ease.

The chicken wings - WOW! I normally am not so into fish sauce but the balance with the flavors made these an instant favorite. So tasty, perfect crispy outside and tender juicy inside. Be aware these are made to order and only two orders can be made at a time in kitchen so be prepared to wait if you add these to your order (well worth it)

We also had the vegetarian yellow curry which was flavorful and aromatic. The Bun Bo Gio Cua (C3) blew my socks off, such good flavor and spicy but in the best way. I’ve never had this dish before but I feed this version has set the bar very high. The house made crab patties were the star. We also had the house vermicelli bowl (E1) and everything was bright and delicious.

Will definitely be ordering again! And hats off to the staff and kitchen for handling such a surge in demand with...

This was our first time visiting Hanoi Kitchen. The restaurant was very clean and appealing with live plants everywhere. The owner was very kind and friendly. Then the fish sauce wings came,, OMG! They were huge and delicious! Then we had the pork soup and tamarind pork combo. Both were amazing, but the tamarind pork was incredible! Slow braised, fall off the bone and melt in your mouth with very rich sauce. Lastly, we had the fried rice and it was easily the best fried rice I've ever eaten. Well done Hanoi Kitchen! We'll be back soon! Edit: We've been to Hanoi Kitchen six or seven times now. My wife is in love with the Tamarind pork, while I try something different each time. Tonight it was the spicy rice noodle soup with beef, pork shank, and crab cakes. I loved it! I haven't had anything yet that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. I'm also positive that the fish sauce wings are the best I've ever had. Thank you...

Decided to try this restaurant since Tempe reviews looked decent and I’m in the area often. Came here with my partner, and we ordered their pho Hanoi, bun rieu, salad rolls and a Thai tea. Unfortunately, the salad rolls never made it to the table but that wasn’t an issue. The pho and bun rieu was really good and set at a very reasonable price- I would def come back for it again. Customer service was lackluster but that’s probably bc my server was also preparing our food and also tending to other customers dining-in as an elderly woman (must be the server’s mother) is at the table folding napkins with utensils. If you don’t have any patience- I would not recommend coming here since they’re understaffed (when i went), but the food is definitely worth waiting for. I support mom n pop shops like Hanoi Kitchen. Would love to see this restaurant get more exposure but I feel like they’re very well known in SE PDX.

My family and I were visiting and decided to check this place out for dinner. And this place absolutely delivered!! The owner is so kind and personable. They have pear trees out in the parking lot and when my mom asked about it, the owner gave us a bag of pears!! So so generous!! The atmosphere is very casual and comfortable. For the food, it hit the spot oh my goodness. The fish sauce wings (under appetizers) were so crispy and not oily whatsoever. The catfish was sweet and nicely balanced with the rice. And my favorite would have to be the canh chua tom, tasted exactly like home. My mom ordered the bun bo, I didn’t try it personally but she said that there was a generous amount of just about everything that should be in a bun Bo and that it suited her taste palette well. Definitely check this place out and support a local business!!

I sought out to get a bowl of pho solo for lunch before hitting the farmers market. I ordered the banh cuon and pho Hanoi. Banh cuon was warm with fresh toppings and a perfect nuoc mam. Hanoi style pho, I discovered on my trip to Hanoi, is different from southern style which is what I grew up eating in Portland. Hanoi style has a lighter broth and flavor is more beef forward than spice forward. I added Thai Basil, jalapeños and lemon juice. No hoisin or sriracha was brought out so I went without. The pho tasted like the bowls I’ve had in Hanoi but with more generous amounts of meat. The dining area was very empty so I greatly enjoyed a quiet solo dining experience, but I hope more and more people come and check this neighborhood gem out.
