UPDATE 2021: Biked over here yesterday for a lunch date- and couldn't believe how packed this place was! The lunch rush is REAL when it comes to Jade, so be prepared to be creative in finding a seat while waiting a bit longer for your food. I noticed about 5 tables with plates and cups, just waiting to be cleaned. We were in a huge line of folks nervous about finding a table (don't forget you can eat upstairs), but I was curious as to why these tables weren't being cleaned up and ready for new customers. As a previous review mentioned, this place might be understaffed- and due to not having enough employees you might see some dirty tables during the lunch rush. We ordered a variety of goodies, pictured includes a veggie bao bun, salad rolls with chicken and tofu, and many, many baked goods. All great food- tasty and filling! Huge shout out to the salad rolls, they came with a GORGEOUS peanut sauce that I would inhale every day if I could. I know I'll be back and probably update this review to 5 stars. Just a bit grumpy about the tons of tables that weren't being cleaned for customers waiting for tables.

I used to love Jade. My family went all the time. But I must say that over the last decade, the quality of the food and the ingredients have gone noticeably worse, and it is at a point where it is no longer acceptable. Today I ordered a Vietnamese beef stew where the carrots and beef were probably cooked in a thin soup for 15 mins tops. The carrots were still crunchy and the beef very tough. The spring onions tells me how the whole thing was only cooked briefly. This famous Vietnamese dish I love so much had had neither flavor nor respect. Our eggplant dish was so oily it had at least 5 tablespoon of visible oil floating on top. The rice they served are the cheapest kind wholesale: broken rice. And it was quite hard. I don’t know how it is for others, but to pay $20 per entre plus 20% tip for counter service, I don’t find this quality to be acceptable. As an Asian chef I also find it sad that they have to cut corners to this degree. Maybe some of your customers can’t tell, but I sure hope you guys do better so that we can return to enjoy your offerings.

I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 14 years and have only been to Jade a handful of times. The food is just okay and the service is always very slow - for the price, I feel there are much better options out there. On my most recent visit, I ordered in person and waited for it to-go. Food took 25 minutes and they weren’t busy at all. I had to go up to the counter and ask if my order was ready. They made me wait even longer because they had to specially make my shrimp salad rolls. In all fairness, I got 4 rolls and they were pretty good! Peanut sauce is tasty. The sesame beef was good, but I had to chop it into bite sized pieces. Sticky rice clumped together too much and was hard to eat. Chicken papaya salad was bland, and the cabbage came in a big hunk. I had to chop it up myself, which was a bunch of extra work. The macaroons were tasty! I got raspberry, pistachio, salted caramel, and passionfruit. Salted caramel one tasted stale, but the rest were good. The family that runs Jade seems nice, but for $50+, I don’t feel Jade is worth it.

Wow. I have never been so touched by the service we received from Danny who works here. We came when it was a dinner rush and it was clear there was a high demand all at once for the staff. My partner and I were out for a date night and I was introducing him to Jade Teahouse as he had never been before and it was a favorite of mine. We ordered 2 entrees and after we sat down Danny came and told us that there was only enough ingredients to make half of one of our entrees so he comped the dish, said they would still make what they could with the ingredients they had left and then asked if we wanted anything in addition. I asked for a side of rice noodles with chili oil and he comped that too which I was shocked by. When he brought the noodles out, he also said that there in fact was enough ingredients to make the entire original entree but still refused to let us pay for it. He also warned us that the chili oil was insanely spicy and that the noodles might be too much heat to eat. Boy was he right, we couldn’t even finish one bite of them, but he came to check and when we saw how they were affecting us he took them away and said I’ll make you something better. He brought us an entire new dish that was phenomenal. Since he wouldn’t allow us to pay, we tried to tip him the amount but he refused to let us tip so we left it in the tip jar in hopes that it makes it to his paycheck somehow! We will 10000% be back and make sure to recommend as much as we can so that Danny gets the appreciation...

It wasn't very busy when I visited, but the staff seemed a bit overwhelmed. You might think they were a new business, or had just had a lot of staff turnover.

The grilled pork vermicelli salad was kind of light on the pork. There were two small chunks of pork on skewers. One of the skewers was overcooked, and the meat wouldn't come off easily. It was difficult and messy to get it off the skewers and into the rest of the salad. However the imperial rolls were perfectly executed and awesome.

The outdoor dining area looks nice on the surface, but has some serious flaws. Mainly, you bus your own tables and the staff doesn't appear to do any kind of clean up after people leave. Although many tables were open it wasn't easy to find a clean one. I was at the first clean space I could find for a few minutes 'til I realized my chair was at a funny angle because there was a huge bush in the space. I couldn't really sit there properly. I moved tables, and found the new table had legs on two different heights of floor, making it wobble at the slightest touch. Whoever laid out their outdoor dining area should have put a bit more thought into it.

I'd give this place 3.5 stars. I'll round down to 3 because it was a little expensive for what you get. I'd come back for the imperial rolls, but probably wouldn't order the grilled pork again. I might want to avoid the seating problems by...

So my particular meal was highly mediocre, but i wont fault this place because i sampled other food that was fantastic.

Basically... dont get the pork and crab udon noodle soup. The local we ate with was raving about it and I cant for the life of me understand why. the flavor wasnt good, the noodles there chopped up into tiny pieces like what you do with a 2 year olds food, and it was just plain disappointing all around. i didnt like the fatty pork floating in it either. meh!

But i will say that the Halibut plate was DELICIOUS. wow, the flavor of sauce all mixed in with rice and the other super fresh veggies and outstanding fish. highy saddened it wasnt my meal!

My friend also got the papaya salad (first time ive had) and it was fresh and flavorful. highly recommend both.

This is a local spot to Sellwood residents that is moderately priced and fairly quick. one thing the was quite unprofessional and a major slip up was that all of our party was servered their food...and then i sat there for probably 20 minutes without me. everyone was finished eating by the time I got mine --- and I didnt even like it! no real apology made by the staff either 0__0 Had I not been nibbling on my friends meal the whole time it would have been...
