[Update] I updated my rating to 3 stars. I went back to get a refund and there was very little hassle and the cashier Celia was very understanding. However, I was lectured by a woman who seemed like a manager and said, "all guacamole has cilantro in it every time anywhere you go, even if it's just a little bit." I know for a fact this isn't true because you can easily buy prepared guacamole at a grocery store that doesn't have it. There was no need for her to be condescending like that. She was also griping about the fact that I requested some ingredients removed, which is apparently considered a "modification" which is not allowed. The manager refused to acknowledge the fact that there was red rice that had tomato in it that I was not informed about after mentioning it several times, but the cashier took responsibility and apologized at least. [End of update]
I ordered the El Guapo without the pumpkin seed avocado salsa, no pico de gallo, and no bell peppers. It's still came with avocado which had cilantro in it. It also came with red rice. I'm allergic to tomato and cilantro tastes like soap to me. I even asked specifically about all the ingredients and told them that I was allergic to tomato. They need a more detailed and precise ingredients list of what is in the burrito.
If you have any food allergies, intolerances, or aversions to certain foods, you should probably list them all out to be safe.
I will say that at least the cashier and cook were friendly to interact with so at least there's...
Read moreI've been here four time and tried four burritos: Zumpongo: 5 (out of 5) stars. Rich and complex flavors. Exceptional. All 3 side sauces (red, orange, and green) were high quality and unique. El Basico: 3 stars. Several pieces of gristly, inedible meat. Flavors were typical and boring. Side sauces not the same as before (even remotely) and of lower quality. El Guapo: 4 stars. Interesting flavors and textures. Good quality produce. Side sauces same as with El Basico, but didn't try the green. Chili Rojo: 5 stars. Rich and complex flavors. Exceptional. I only tried the red and orange (the red is hotter "devil's tears' and the orange is habanero and not as hot--REALLY good) side sauces were high quality and unique again. YAY!
Got several more to try. I gave 5 stars overall because the trend is toward great burritos, not the poor exception--but hey, they did warn us that it was (el)"basic" lol I'm most happy that the high quality side sauces are back. That really matters too, as most people put them on...
Read moreIt's been a while since I've had a burrito, but Smart Donkey may well shorten the time before I have another. Burritos and drinks are pretty much the only things on the menu, but when you do something well, there's no need to try anything different. At the time of my visit, there were 11 different burritos on the menu. My wife had the Uruapan (Michoacán style carnitas) and I went with El Basico (carne asada). Both were terrific. They seemed a bit on the expensive side, but a single burrito provided two very satisfying lunches. The leftovers reheated quite well. The location is a one-truck cart pod. There are a couple of picnic tables and seating at the bar inside the covered space. The bartenders take food orders and pass them along to the truck itself, that forms the back bar. Outside, there are two large high top covered tables where you can eat standing up. For those familiar with the neighborhood, the truck is in the former DIY car wash location just...
