Portland Vietnamese Restaurant Recommendation - Pho Van

We lingered on the grounds before entering to admire the pots of real lotus flowers planted in water as well as the beautiful red maple, bamboo, topiary, and statuary. Once seated, we started our meal with an order of salad rolls. The rolls themselves were freshly wrapped and served at room temperature with generous portions of pork and shrimp with lettuce, cucumbers, and rice noodles. The peanut sauce, however, was also at room temperature and in my opinion, not sweet enough, (I admit I’m comparing to good Thai restaurants where the sauce is served warm and is more flavorful.) Our order of jasmine tea was too strong to drink—way too much tea for the size of the pot. Once balanced with more hot water, it was excellent. Our main dishes were the tofu basil and catfish, both served hot and cooked just right. Both delicious. Servers were friendly and accommodating but hard to find when we wanted something. We had a delightful surprise at the end of the meal: banana bread, which turned out to be more of a bread pudding with tapioca. Just delicious! The prices were reasonable considering the high quality of the food. Overall, an excellent experience.

This is the first time I encountered this kind of food and service in Portland and this is really disappointing me. I ordered a grilled catfish togo, which costs 54$. However, when it arrived at my house, it looked burned and tasted burned as well, as you can see in the photo. Besides, when we cut it, the meat inside is dry (I assume because they kept it in the fridge for too long) and cold (since it is not heated enough). I don't mind having a smaller size than the amount I paid, but having under standard quality is unacceptable for me. I did contact the restaurant to try to have it replaced however they asked me to return the catfish in full size. How can I do it when we had to cut it open to know how bad it was? They tried to explain how well the food was cooked, now 2 out of 4 people eating encounter stomachache and diarrhea right after eating the food. (Given the fact that we only had that food for dinner only, we did not have any side dishes at all). This is terrible restaurant with terrible food and service. I would definitely never come back for my own health safety.

We loved the food. Everything was delicious and flavorful! The drinks tasted good, fairly made. It is the service that wont have us returning which makes me sad because it was delicious. Maybe we will get take out but thats it. First it took almost 20 minutes till someone simply came and took our order. The place wasnt packed, many of the tables were empty. I wait tables and run food and such i know what im talking about, i never leave people sitting as long as we were. Second we ordered an appetizer(wings)two drinks and two pho entrees. The drinks came first, pho, second.....and wings for dessert? They were delicious but we were super hungry when we arrived and were dissapoonted when we were too full to eat the wings fresh and hot. :/ Third it took so long to get a to go container i sent my boyfriend to pay the bill at the counter which is what it looked like everyone else was doing.....our bad. We were followed out to our car and basically interrogated about paying for our meal. We left a 7$ tip on a 45$ ticket and then she was upset with us for not paying her directly. Generally wait staff will tell you they will ring you up. Needless to say we wont be returning for dine in. I felt so mistreated after spending so much money and tipping decently after not even recieving our food in the proper order. I have NEVER left a place without paying. Ever. I was legitimately baffled and floored after being questioned. I hope they dont do this to other people. So...

My experience at the restaurant was great at first, the food was good, and the service was wonderful. The waitress who serve my table did such an amazing job, so before I left, I gave the tip directly to her. Everything would be perfect if it end here, but NO!! When I came to the front desk to pay my bill, the reception guy give me my recipe and immediately ask me for tip on it (in a quite disrespectful way). He just went straight and ask "Are you gonna add tip or not?" Since I already tip, I answered him that I already gave the tip to the waitress who serve my table. He then left for 1min, and came back try to ask me who is the girl that I tip. He keep asking again and again try to find out who she was, which make me wonder "What is that man gonna do to the girl tip?" Giving tip is a choice, not a force. The way that man ask for tip is very forceful to me. Also I chose who I want to tip, and my tip go directly to the waitress for her good job, not on the bill just to be share by other!!! Because the man keep forcefully try to ask for the waitress, I have to add a 2nd tip on the recipe just to get him to stop looking for the girl. I don't know if he still trying to find the poor girl after I leave, but there is one thing I know, I will never return to this restaurant again thank to that guy attitude!! Also, since I already add a 2nd tip, I hope the waitress get to keep...

If you’ve ever wanted to feel like a nuisance and pay for it, this is the place for you. The food? 5 stars, delicious!! But the service? Oh, where do I begin? Upon arrival, I was graced with the warm hospitality of someone who clearly didn’t want to be there. Silverware was lovingly tossed in my general direction—I'm just grateful it didn’t hit me in the eye. Once our food finally arrived, the service team vanished like magicians. No check-ins, no refills, no "how is everything?" — it was like we ceased to exist. Maybe they thought if they ignored us long enough, we'd just disappear. Got leftovers? Perfect! Just don’t forget to bring your wallet to pay for the privilege of a to-go box. Nothing says customer appreciation like charging you extra for the to go boxes.

As for the check? Asked once, got nothing. Asked again, still nothing. Eventually had to go on a little adventure across the restaurant to find someone who looked mildly interested in helping. I guess self-checkout is the next step? And don’t worry about tipping—they've already done it for you! A generous automatic 18% tip for a service level that makes the DMV look like a spa. So if you're in the mood for delicious food served with a side of disdain and a sprinkle of audacity, look no further. Highly recommend if you're into being ghosted...
