I just had horrible service here. Im not sure if it's because i am a woman of color or if the service is generally just bad. I ordered my drink and got a pastry as well. Was handed my pastry, took a seat. I ordered a chai. Moments later I was served an iced latte. I took a sip and realized not only was it iced hut it was coffee not chai so I mentioned I had ordered a chai at which point the server asked if i waa sure. Yes I was sure, and I was polite in the request thinking perhaps he was tired or had other things on his mind. Then he brings me a to go cup filled with ice and some chai. I didn't ask him to correct it but I did take the ice out since i had not ordered an iced drink and less than a quarter of the cup was left with liquid. I sat for a few moments and then mentioned this to both the person who made my drink wrong twice and the other employee working at which point she nor he apologize. They asked if i was just trying to get my money back and said, "you know we are just human, we all make mistakes." Sure we all make mistakes but when I the service industry we try to make sure we are listening to what people request, and we apologize if we get it wrong and attempt to rectify it. There was no intention to rectify it, only defensiveness and an insinuation i was just trying to get free drinks. I definitely felt like I was treated like a second class citizen. I won't...
Read morePortland is full of tons of small independent coffee shops, and I've been to many of them, but Red E is easily my absolute favorite. It checks every box for what I feel makes a great coffee shop. The atmosphere is relaxing, inclusive, and welcoming, with pieces by local artists (which are available to purchase if one really speaks to you!), cozy seating, two chess tables, and a quiet, laid back vibe. The food is delicious, and they have awesome breakfast sandwiches, including vegetarian options! This was especially exciting for me, because I nearly never find those, and when I do they're usually very basic. But Red E has more than one vegetarian sandwich, and they're amazing! The staff is super friendly, and remembered me on my second visit. And of course, most importantly, the coffee and teas are so so SO good. Their seasonal drinks are to die for. It's a great day for me when I get to head out there on the weekend and sit back with a honey cardamom latte and a Catch Up sandwich, and grab a rad button on the way out for my collection. To make a (very) long story short, Red E is a must-try, and guaranteed to...
Read moreAlways a nice selection of baked goods and coffee. The tea is tasty and comes in a little pot with a cup. A variety of seating options at tables, bars, couches, and outside. It can be crowded and noisy, but I like bringing my laptop and working here in this environment. When it is warm they have garage style doors they open in the back and No A/C so it can become hot but is usually really nice. Service is great and friendly, and prices are reasonable. The local art is always great to admire too! Thanks for staying local. Overall, one of my fave neighborhood spots. I would give a 4.5 really but that isn't an option. One star knocked for: loose outlets for laptop chargers that never stay in place. My charger constantly falls out. And when the doors are left open flies get in. Once when I was there, there were many flies near the window and it grossed me out. Plus I wish that so many people didn't know this was a great spot so it was...
