Wonderful cafe and delicious bean to bar fair trade chocolate! With so many chocolate boutiques closing, it was so nice to see a nice chocolatier pop up in the city. LOVE Roste, my family enjoyed a decadent chocolatey feast to our heart's content!
The goopy sipping chocolate is really rich and the flight is fun to try, great for sharing! The chocolate has different texture and flavor profile based on the origin. While Peru was the rarest chocolate, Indian was my favorite (no bias here!). We definitely experienced a chocolate overload after a few delightful spoonfuls, we threw in the towel and wrapped up the chocolate in little containers. The chocolate was great in coffee the next morning, the perfect mocha!
The Hot Chocolate is really sweet and 1/2 way through the cup, I threw in the towel and passed it down for others to enjoy. Next time, I would try the Mocha to help cut the sweetness of the chocolate or try the Italian Bicerin. The frappuccinos looked tempting!
Skip the stale pastries! The chocolate chip cookie has a 2 day rule and even after a staff member gave me a fresh one made that day, it still didn't taste good. The muffin and the cinnamon bun were also a miss. No matter how many times I searched for the perfect bite, I just couldn't find it. The alluring pastries are deceptive. Save room for the chocolatey drinks!
My trip wouldn't be complete without some chocolate bars to take home! The luscious hazelnut Gianduja nuggets are so soft and buttery, they literally melt in your mouth! I enjoyed them so much that my sister-in-law bought some for me after I flew back and gave it to me on a family vacation.
Roste was a culinary highlight of my Portland trip, the chocolate was mouth-watering goooood! Wish there was a location on the East Coast in DC, can't wait to fly back for...

Dear Roste,
I think I’m in love with you. No...I know I am. From the moment I walked through your doors in Portland, I felt it: that unmistakable thrill of finding something truly special. And then I tasted your chocolate, and that was it. Game over. You ruined me for all other chocolate. I’ll never be the same. Let’s talk about that chocolate. You don’t just make it, you craft it. From bean to bar, with cacao sourced from all over the world, every bite is a tiny, powerful flavor bomb that somehow manages to be bold, complex, silky, earthy, bright, deep….all at once. It’s chocolate with a soul. Chocolate with swagger. Chocolate that whispers sweet nothings to your taste buds and then mic-drops on your tongue. And it’s not just in the bars. It’s in your drinks. Your baked goods. Your magic little confections that taste like they were designed by wizards and pastry angels. Every item in the shop feels intentional, like someone cared a lot. (Spoiler: that someone is Michael Arnovitz, chocolate historian and clearly a genius.) Roste doesn’t just sell chocolate. Roste tells stories with chocolate. And once you’ve had it, there's no going back. You’ll find yourself comparing every bite of every other chocolate for the rest of your life to that one time at Roste when you tasted what chocolate is truly capable of. So thank you, Roste. Thank you for making something this beautiful, this wild, this unforgettable. I dream about your chocolate. I recommend it to strangers like it’s my job. And honestly? I feel a little bit sorry for anyone who doesn’t live nearby. Hopelessly yours, Someone who now measures time as “Before Roste” and...
Read moreOh my gawds. If you are a chocolate lover who knows the need (and/or greed) for thick drinking chocolate living in Portland you may have felt a pang of despair when Alma chocolate closed and Cacao closed.
The door opened at Roste Chocolate House and the smell of chocolate is so dense in the air we could already taste it. The street level space has tons of natural light, gleaming metallic mixers, and was immaculately clean. The table spacing provides room for mobility device users and enough distance from your neighbors that conversation still feels intimate. It felt upscale and spacious without feeling exclusive or formal.
Everything we tasted was incredible. From the drinking chocolate to the mousse heart. There are a selection of single origin chocolate, they offer tastings and bar making events. There are beautiful baked goods and gluten free options as well.
The staff were responsive charming and thoughtful. They handled a flurry of folks arriving at the same time with patience and grace. They provided excellent service and communication.
It was truly a welcoming haven for a sensory experience that fully reset our moods and experiences of the day. Totally worth a trip across the river. Such a smart spot as an alternative to an exclusively coffee cafe or for an afternoon decadence. What a pleasure to patronize this business. I can’t...
