I was meeting my sister in Portland to travel to a family reunion, and booked an overnight stay at the Hampton - Pearl District because of its proximity to the train station. I was so glad I did!
I arrived on the train and was able to easily walk to the hotel from Portland Union Station, about a 7-minute (0.5-mile) stroll. My sister was flying in, and it was a simple trip on the Red Line to the airport (although we needed a taxi to get back to the hotel because of the late hour, which ran approximately $60).
Raphael at the front desk was very sweet; he checked me in and answered all my questions as I was meeting friends for dinner that evening. There is a rooftop patio for hotel guests, and my friends and I were able to enjoy a happy hour (BYOB and snacks) before heading out to the restaurant. The patio has lovely views of the Pearl District, and is very quiet and well-appointed with plenty of seating.
Alona was lovely in checking us out the next morning; she stored our luggage so that we could have lunch with friends before heading to the train station, and even took photos of us in front of the vault that is built into the wall of the lobby.
Our room was very nice: two queen-sized beds, plenty of room, and pretty street view. We slept quite comfortably! Breakfast the next morning was wonderful; it was a full hot breakfast, with eggs, sausages and make-your-own waffles in addition to the normal fare of cereals, yogurt, fruit, breads and pastries, and--of course--coffee and tea. Everything was delicious, and all the common areas of the hotel are open, airy and inviting. There's even a small art gallery area off to the side of the elevators.
Security was ensured by the vigilant front-desk staff and by the elevators requiring our key cards to operate. But honestly, the neighborhood feels quite safe (for a major city downtown area), and we had no concerns. Our friends had to park on the street as the hotel does not have a parking lot, but neither had any difficulty finding a spot within a block of the hotel.
The next time we return to Portland, we'll definitely return to the Hampton in the...
Read moreThis hotel is very clean and nice. The staff were all outstanding. The location is within walking distance to pretty much everything - shopping, food, etc. However there were a few negatives to consider before staying here: The lowest the temperature of the room will go to is 68. It was humid and hot and hard to sleep. The parking situation stinks. They charge 48.00 a day for guests to park (valet only). This is very high (lots of parking downtown for 24-30 a day) especially when your guests are already paying to stay at your hotel. Only other option was to park on the street. We saw 3 cars with shattered windows near ours when we left in the morning. Do not leave anything in your car at all. As most people know - Portland is the land of no accountability and they love to coddle criminals. As such people do whatever they want here. There are a ton of drug addicted homeless mentally unstable people walking around yelling and in different states of dress. We were with several volleyball teams that stayed for a weekend for a tournament. After checking in we were told that the free breakfast didn’t start til 7- which is later than most hotels start. We had to be at the gym by 7 for the games so that meant no breakfast. They did make a small grab n go for the girls with a bagel and apple but it would have been nice to have a small station for the girls AND their parents to grab a few things to go. We were looking forward to sitting by the fire pit on the rooftop area that they advertise on their website but it was nowhere to be found and judging by other reviews it hasn’t been...
Read moreWe received a noise complaint for our crying baby (around 9:30-10pm), as she had been crying for about 5 minutes (baby did not want to be held by her dad while I stepped into the washroom). I received the call from the front desk as I stepped out of the washroom. The hotel agent on the phone sounded very apologetic about having to report the noise complaint, offered us milk for the baby to see if that would help (not what she wanted). I apologized but also pointed out I would also love for her to stop crying and and not disturb the hotel guests, but it's hard to reason with a baby, because - babies cry. We were in a room with connecting doors, so the rooms were not as sound proof as we and the neighbours would like. In hindsight, I think the hotel staff should've offered our neighbours a different room, rather than try to offer help on how to keep our baby quiet as then it didn't make our stay feel very family friendly at that point. Fortunately we were checking out the next day. Feedback for hotel staff: might be helpful to be mindful about placing young families in rooms with connecting doors.
Other than that experience we enjoyed our stay at the Hampton Inn. The breakfast buffet had a good selection of food each day (we stayed 3 nights). We stayed in a King-size studio which had plenty of space for our little ones to play and run around. It was also in a central location and walkable to lots of restaurants and stores. Valet parking is expensive.
Will likely stay here again (hopefully not in a room with...
