Updated 2022:
Have had many pizzas and the consistent quality is very impressive.
I'm going to give Roma Pizza four stars based on the food quality, service and friendliness, and price.
Having lived in the metro NYC area and being a New York Style Pizza enthusiast, I wanted to sample the famous New York pizza.
I have visited Di Fara Pizzeria in Brooklyn to experience Dominico DeMarco's nationally renowned pizza. This is the gold standard that all other NY Style pizza is judged.
Roma's NY Style Pizza is very good, and deserves to be called New York Pizza. The hallmark of any NY Style pizza is the crust, the sauce, and the cheese.
The crust had a good taste and correct crumb. It is thin, with airy crust, and flimsy for folding. What I look for in NY crust, is that the bottom be "leopard skinned", and the top lightly brown, and any bubbles on the too slightly charred.
I would have preferred the bottom be charred a little more, and the top be cooked more. That said, people not familiar with the finest NY pizzas might complain the pizza is burnt if it was charred to my preference.
The sauce was good, and sweet like it should be. I would have preferred a little more of the sauce.
The pepperoni (thinly topping I ever get on NY Pizza) was good. Large diameter and thin sliced. Again, the top side of the pizza being cooked more would have been preferred -- the pepperoni should just begin to char on the edges and begin to curl. There was no charring or curling of the pepperoni.
The cheese was good, and the amount used was fine. But if I had to guess, I font think it was Grande brand whole milk mozz. No, I am not a salesperson and dont get paid to push cheese).
Grande cheese cooks better than any other, looks better, and tastes better, and I just don't think it was Grande.
By all means, it was good pizza -- better than just good. I just want to judge it against the best, and this write up explains what they might consider doing to bring it to the next level.
Back to the crust, if I had to guess, it's made and fermented with a lot of time. It has a flavor that is deeper than those made with dough that doesn't really ferment.
Also, the crust had a lot of sir and a few surface bubbles -- and that is a good thing. Again, some may complain, but surface bubbles are supposed to happen on NY pizza.
The service was great, the restaurant was clean, our order was taken and our food came out quickly. I cant even suggest how anything could be better in that regard.
It is a big restaurant with a bar, and big inside with multiple floors and dining rooms. That is important in this age with covid still a problem.
Update 2023: Still great food, great service, and at a great value. Goibt once or twice per week, consistency is always there.
Never an experience that is less...
Read moreWe usually love Roma. This trip not so much. We went fir dinner around 7pm so it wouldn't be as busy. We were seated fairly quickly and our order was taken and our drinks brought to the table. Thats where the good part of our visit ended. It was a bit of a wait for our food but it was a Friday night so we understood that. Right as our food was brought to the table our waitress informed us that the pasta we ordered wasn't available but they substituted another type. Well quite frankly I felt like we should have been asked if the substitution was ok or given a chance to choose something else to order. My husband's drink was empty and she took his glass to get him a refill. 20 minutes later he received a warm beer. In the interim, my drink needed to be filled. She rushed by the table, grabbed the cup without asking what was in it *there were 4 people at our table) comes back and said I hope this was a Coke because thats what I refilled it with. It was not. No one at pur table even ordered a coke. Not once did she adk how iur meal was. She came back to ask us if we wanted dessert. We declined and asked for carry out boxes. All the other waitress around us were taking their customers food and returning them in take out boxes. We got some sat on our table with iur check and she was gone again. We saw her several times throughout our dining experience standing off to the side just talking to the other staff. I was extremely disappointed with this visit. I was a waitress before. I understand its hard work and some days are worse than others but you need to ensure your customers are at the very least happy...
Read moreWe have been going to Romas for years. And I was always amazed at how every single time we go, the food and drinks are awesome! Anytime we would go out to eat, I never wanted to go anywhere else but Romas. I have gone to restaurants where once and second time are good, but then things change and it starts to stink. However, tonight Romas was just like every other restaurant. The soup and bread came before the drinks from the bar. The waitress told me sorry. But the bar tender was really busy. I looked and saw just 3 people sitting at the bar. When my favorite drink came, it was missing the alcohol. I didn't want a milk drink. I had to go up to the bar tender and ask for the alcohol to be added. The french fries were soggy and not as crispy as usual. The waitress told me sometimes the fries do sit there. She offered to get me fresh fries. No, sorry. My meal would then be soggy by the time they arrived. The thing is, the restaurant wasn't even busy like normal. Usually, most the seats are full. Tonight, there was just us and two other tables. I really dont get it. Please fix this. The only reason I keep going here is because I can depend on good food, drinks and service. Please let this just be an off day thing. Dont become like every other restaurant. I love Romas because I can always know my food will be fresh and my drinks from the bar delish! Thanks for reading my review Romas. Please stay a great restaurant. There are not many great...
