We heard several great reviews about this place during our visit to Princeton. But did it live up to expectations?
My son had researched some places to eat, and he found this one. Some people online really talked it up. He also knew that we were supposed to park in back, which is where our GPS took us, so we never saw the front of the restaurant.
Finding a place to park was easy, but that didn’t mean the place wasn’t busy. Actually, we had 4-5 families in front of us.
While we stood in line, a server asked if we knew what we wanted. That was a plus - they would take our order while we waited and then our food would arrive more quickly once we sat down. Since it was our first time there, we asked for a menu.
The menu is simple with some pasta and sandwiches. But the pizza is what we had come for. Basically your options are plain (cheese only), one topping or the special, although you can go half and half. The special includes everything except anchovies and onions by default, but you can add them, too, for no extra charge.
Our server recommended a large pizza for the three of us. And we ordered half plain and half pepperoni.
Once we were seated, someone came to take our drink order. We just asked for water. As a side note, though, they don’t offer refills on their soft drinks.
The pizza eventually arrived. It is a very thin crust, which is something I like. The cheese was plentiful. I’m not a fan of pepperoni, but my wife and son are. They said this was the real deal, not those thin slices you find at the supermarket. They may look smaller in diameter but are definitely thicker. I actually thought two were stuck together.
As for taste, it was very good. I thought it was a bit overcooked, though, for my preference.
Would I return? Sure. In fact, I know our family will go here again the next time we’re in the area. I’d gladly give it another try. And I already know that the next time we eat at Conte’s, we’ll order...
Read moreWe went to Conte’s tonight for dinner. It had been a long while since we had been here. It has not missed a beat! We got 2 pizzas a plane for my wife and son a sausage pepper and onion for me. If you have never been here before it is a must try for more than just the pizza. It has a classic old school feel inside that takes you back in time. It feels like a classic New Jersey pizza shop and just the atmosphere makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. There is always a wait but they have a great workaround for that. They take your order when you put your name in so when your table is ready, boom so is your pizza. Very nice touch so you don’t have to wait twice. Now for the pizza. The sausage pepper onion was very good nice sweet flavor. It could have been a little more well done so the pizza held the toppings better. (S,P,&O pizzas can get soggy) this wasn’t soggy but could have been just a tad more done for my liking but I like my pizza well done. The cheese pizza was perfect my wife and son loved it good crisp crust. It had been too long since I had been here and I am glad we came. Fun night excellent pizza. Expect a wait but not a killer. There are lots of good pizza spots in New Jersey but only a handful of what I call destination pizza and Conte’s is destination pizza, worth a trip. It’s a place you bring your friends from out of town or out of state to show that Jersey is the best state for...
Read moreI have been going to Contes for years. I still think the pizza is amazing, but today I was deeply disturbed by the lack of customer service. I went with two friends. The food runner was not paying attention when she was putting the hot pizza pan on the tray. The pizza pan fell off the tray and slid into sodas that fell on my friend. While the food runner did apologize, the servers and staff left the spill on the floor. No one checked to see if my friend was burned. When my friend went to speak to Kat ( the cashier) about not getting charged for the pizza due to the accident, Kat’a response was “ I am sorry, it is really busy in Fridays and these things happen”. This is such an inappropriate response and lack of care by the staff at contes. My friend handed his card to pay. Kat than accused my friend of throwing the card like a child. This is when I stepped in and told Kat that I did not appreciate her tone, and would like to speak to a manager. Apparently there was no manager on call. I also mentioned that the cooks were not wearing gloves when preparing food. I was told that I was blowing the situation out of proportion rather than apologizing and re-training Kat. I will now not come to Contes and share this experience with friends and colleagues. Contes needs to retrain staff and remember that when you show empathy towards your customers they will keep coming back. This is no longer...
