On a walk through Wayland Square this weekend I figured I would pop my head into Silver Star Bakery. It’s an unassuming little storefront so I hadn’t gone in before, but I’m glad I finally did. Why? The loaf of multigrain bread I got here beats anything I’d find at the supermarket! Never have I been happier to forget to buy bread earlier this week. The multigrain bread is a nice, hearty, loaf that holds up well for sandwiches or toast. I kept it simple while I was there and only got the bread, but they also had beautiful looking Portuguese treats—everything from bubbly and crisp pasteis de nata to a mini orange cake (maybe some variant of bolo de laranja?) The girl working was outside putting chairs away and completely ignored us standing inside. After waiting a bit, my aunt went out to ask if we could still order, and the response we got was, “It depends what time it is,” with a tone that made it pretty clear we weren’t welcome. She eventually came back in, barely said a word, and made it obvious that we were a major inconvenience. So five years later I have probably one of the worst experiences in a bakery in a very long time. The doughboys were ice cold, and the bread that they said it was fresh was also cold. The woman recommended an almond dessert. That was the consistency of a hard brick. I went at 6 AM so they haven't been open long. Now I have to go to the Luisa Tania bakery because every time you go there they are fresh and often sold out so sad. What a difference five...
