Read moreTwo facts have long weighed on me about the otherwise fantastic culinary scene in Providence: there is no good gelateria, despite strong Italian presence; and there is no good sushi, despite the fantastic sources of seafood. Well, the latter no longer weighs on me. Somo, which opened 4 months ago in the buzzing new south-downtown neighborhood, is a top-class place to eat sushi, not just in New England but on the entire East Coast. Chef and owner Nino was trained in the Japanese sushi ways, which is founded on selecting only the very best fish fresh from the boat. He really knows what he is doing, because the sushi we ate — from maki to sashimi — was out of this world. A home-made flourless chocolate cake truly took us by surprise — when and where can you have that kind of finish after sushi? On top of all the food you find numerous craft beers on draft, in can or bottle, and a small but surprising wine selection — not the predictable things you see on countless menus, but intriguing bottles such as Grenache blanc or a Greek orange wine. So much more to eat and drink here. This is a stunner of an addition to my beloved Providence...
