Two facts have long weighed on me about the otherwise fantastic culinary scene in Providence: there is no good gelateria, despite strong Italian presence; and there is no good sushi, despite the fantastic sources of seafood. Well, the latter no longer weighs on me. Somo, which opened 4 months ago in the buzzing new south-downtown neighborhood, is a top-class place to eat sushi, not just in New England but on the entire East Coast. Chef and owner Nino was trained in the Japanese sushi ways, which is founded on selecting only the very best fish fresh from the boat. He really knows what he is doing, because the sushi we ate — from maki to sashimi — was out of this world. Bluefin tuna so deep and rich, yellowtail so clean and complex, fatty salmon so silky and layered as I haven’t had them in a long time. All accompanied by perfect rice, which the very good sushi places really take seriously (see “ Jiro dreams of sushi”). Kara-age was simply outstanding, and a small portion (per request) of the udon noodles was delightful, though it could be even better with a dash less salt. A home-made flourless chocolate cake truly took us by surprise — when and where can you have that kind of finish after sushi? On top of all the food you find numerous craft beers on draft, in can or bottle, and a small but surprising wine selection — not the predictable things you see on countless menus, but intriguing bottles such as Grenache blanc or a Greek orange wine. So much more to eat and drink here. This is a stunner of an addition to my beloved Providence...

Something is fishy about these google reviews… Not good at all. The sushi is equal or less than supermarket sushi. Rice was sweet as anything, they used way too much of it. They put sesame seeds on the rolls, if you know sushi you already know. Not anything nice to say about the quality of fish. We left about $100 worth of sushi on the table for two people. The Edamame is in a sweet sauce that is absolutely horrible and it’s not even in the pod? That’s the first time I’ve seen that except for a poke/Hawaiian restaurant. When you get edamame to eat with sake you expect it to be salty, not sweet. They don’t have anything on the menu but brought me something else for $15 for a nasty little can about half the size of a coke can that tasted like rubbing alcohol. They didn’t tell me that the sake was something I didn’t even order. I didn’t complain about anything, but I told the server Jamie that I didn’t like the drink and he didn’t care at all, didn’t even offer to get me something else. Check my pictures if you think anything is unfair about my review. I get disappointed by 5/10 sushi restaurants I go to in Providence, but this was a joke. From the service to the sushi to the appetizers to the false advertising about the sake. Just go some there else if you desire sushi, or even a grocery store.

Tried this place with my girlfriend this afternoon. Nice atmosphere and chris, the waiter was very welcoming and friendly. Scanning thru the menu wasn't overwhelming like most sushi restaurants. We ordered the edamame, grilled oysters and the spicy tuna pizza off the “small plates,” and a new york strip off the “entrees,” The edamame had come out first and had amazing flavor with a hint of sweetness. The grilled oysters were great! The spicy tuna pizza was absolutely out of this world! The way the rice crust had a nice crunch on the bottom and a nice soft and slightly chewy top was absolutely heavenly, the tuna was plentiful and the flavor was exquisite. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare, served with a nice glaze and mashed potatoes. Our overall experience was beyond a 5 out of 5. We are so happy we discovered this place. The price was very reasonable. We will be dining here regularly for sure. Thanks for the amazing dining experience! Side note, my girlfriend had forgotten her scarf at the booth and didn’t even realize it. Chris ran after us before we got to our car with the scarf! We were so grateful.

My wife and I showed up at that down time between lunch and dinner service. After entering the restaurant we were meet at the host stand by the owner and head chef although we didn't know it the time. We were seated, ordered drinks, an appetizer, and entree. All were excellent. Towards the end of our meal the owner visited our table to inquire about our meal. In speaking with him it was revealed before opening this restaurant he spent a 30 years in Japan as a sushi chef and that along with preparing my wife's sushi he also cooked my chicken teriyaki with rice. This place is absolutely amazing, exceptionally good food, well prepared bar and attentive staff, even the bathrooms were fancy and super clean! If you're ever in the area, come for the food and enjoy!
