ICHI HIBACHI — Restaurant in Punta Gorda

With the demise of Amanoto Japanese Restaurant in Punta Gorda (but good luck to Tony and his lovely wife for many years of friendship and awesome sushi), this place is the only Japanese restaurant in Punta Gorda.

THE GOOD: Service is on the ball. You walk up to the counter, order what you want, and take the number back to the table. 15 to 20 minutes later, the attendant will bring the food to the table. No need to really leave a tip.

Seems like they make a pretty decent Yum Yum sauce and teriyaki sauce to complement the dishes. I had the steak and shrimp plate. The steak was cooked to medium and the shrimp was a little bit overdone; however, the fried rice that came with it was very good. I also had the yellow fin tuna maki; the tuna tasted fresh and the portion was generous.

THE NOT SO GOOD: The fried rice was a decent portion, but the steak and shrimp portions were minimal. They need to double their portions. I understand the importance of trying to make a buck but at least provide a filling dinner. The sake was overpriced, as was the beer. There is no ambience. It’s basically sitting in an open room eating next to others.

CONCLUSION: If you want, sushi or Teppanyaki cooking in Punta Gorda, this is the place you’ll have to come. The maki is better than Publix. The cooked entrées are one step above the food court, but they are not bad considering there’s not much else in town. I would suggest once a month or so, primarily for the maki. I've been a patron of this place for well over a year. I've referred friends there and treated others to dinner there...Although they've not ever been very courteous...what happened tonight was completely rude and embarrassingly disgusting! I erroniously ordered sushi roll instead of spring roll. The woman server scolded and schooled me very loudly about my mistake in front of everyone. I want to know how she can justify coming from her 3rd world country tomake a decent living off of OUR country's citizens while at the same time, schowling at the very customers she gets her bread and butter from??? I will from this day forward make it a strong point to Inform ALL of my friends about this hohum diner who doesn't know the defiinition of Gratitude and decent customer...

Good: Sushi roll good Bad: everything else. Poorly run. Counter lady took our order and there are table markers you get so they know who gets what. Well she didnt communicate this to us, we asked her is this ours. Then the kid who brings the food, cant read, speak or understand english and doesnt even read the ticket so he goes to every table and asks you if this dish is yours. after he brought our food, he brought more dishes out to us when others had no food yet.
