Strip mall ramen place in Purcellville. Lots of nearby traffic which is a plus for then, but still oddly hidden in such a small town. Lots of turnover in this spot. Unfortunately, I don't think they do enough to differentate themselves from other ramen spots, or other options even in town. All the 5 star reviews we can chalk up to friends or free soft open meals, I suspect.
Ambience and service were good. Nice build out from what was there. Food was ok, not sure if it was just that they were very busy and new, but with $20 ramen, there should be a standard of expectingb at minimum above average. If you truly love ramen, you'll miss Uncommon at chefscape (gone) or the others in Leesburg or not too much further. We live here, but if your visiting you'll likely pass them on the way home. It's like pho in Purcellville based on our experience, it isn't really bad, but it's not great. It will do in a pinch if you don't want to make a 20 minute round trip, but typically is something you regret after dinner. Yes, that trip and extra distance WAS worth it.
Is it because they're new? As things are fine tuned and slow down will it beat out the months worth of "ramen" college kids live on, or those "edgy" (read trying to be trendy) places try to make ramen into burger buns? I honestly don't know. As a local that eats out regularly, it hasn't even sold me to the point I feel a need to revisit. Maybe I will within the next year if they're still there. I don't expect either to be the case, but will update...
Read moreBeen keeping an eye on this place to open for about half a year. They finally opened yesterday. I went in the next day with the wife and daughter. I was expecting better. I thought it is going to be an authentic ramen place. The appetizers were disappointing. The truffle fries are frozen bagged fries sprinkled with truffle dust and Parmesan cheese. The friend oysters also frozen food fried and put in a plate with some green cabbage and carrot spaghetti. For $16 I was expecting better fried oysters. The breading was too much and a liquid would squirt out of the fried oyster upon bitting out of it. The ramen itself was….fine. Tonkotsu broth was very close to the miso broth and just a bit more oily. Tonkatsu should be white-ish in color and thicker since it supposed to be a pork bone marrow broth, but it was not. Not even close to the tonkatsu I am used to. I was excited to have a ramen place in town so I won’t make the trip to Zen Ramen in Berryville any longer but after trying Koyo, I think I’ll stick to traveling in Berryville. Maybe it is just the rough few weeks after opening. I’ll give Koyo another try a few months from now. At the moment, quite dissatisfied….i won’t give bad stars rating since they are at the beginning and I don’t want to hurt a...
Read moreFinally a local Ramen house that I don't have to drive to Reston or DC for, and its fantastic. We were initially apprehensive when Koyo first opened and allowed all the hype to die down. The kids finally broke us down and we stopped in for lunch. I am so thankful that we did because once we sipped the Ramen broth, I could immediately taste that this was not a run of the mill soup. We ordered the Koyo special after starting with the Kaarage appetizer which was hot, fresh and delicious. Our kids ordered bubble teas and the adults opted for the Green Jasmine tea which was perfect, not bitter. Regarding the Koyo Ramen special and with the first sip, I was regretful that we hadn't stopped in sooner. The broth was perfect, not salty at all with a hint of Truffle oil and black garlic. Our son ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen and the pork was so tender, he didn't really have to chew. Overall, we found our new Ramen house and the service was attentive. Annie, restaurant owner, was very kind and welcoming. She informed us that the broth was her special homemade recipe and we could definitely tell. Thank you Annie...
