UMAI KATSU — Restaurant in Quincy

Ordered the Pork Loin Katsu ($17.95 + additional 20% discount with the grand opening promotion lasting until 2024/10/13). Prices are on the higher end, but the portion size was enough for two meals, so it was worth it (even more so with the current promotion).

I was worried that the pork would be dry based on looks, but it actually wasn’t dry at all, and the outside was still crispy by the time I got home. I especially liked the rice, which tasted like sushi rice, and the sauce. The sauce did not taste like traditional katsu sauce that I am used to, but it was very tasty in its own way—creamy and lots of umami. The pork wasn’t big and juicy like the pork katsu that I’ve had in Japan, but I haven’t had any pork katsu like that in the states, so I don’t think I should hold five stars to that standard since Japan is on another level. I visited twice before I leave review. The first visit, I ordered King Katsu and it was very underwhelming. It supposed to be one big piece of Katsu but instead they gave me two small skinny katsu. the presentation and taste was just okay at best. The second visit I tried to udon but oh my, do they even know what udon supposed to taste like?? the soup had no umami at all. It was just hot water with soy sauce.
