Branches had been scratching the side of the house for hours. John was resting on the recliner, two fingers through the hole on the armrest, just as he liked it, anchoring his arm as he inhabited the twilight between alertness and rest.
Maeve was visiting with her sister’s family who lived 2 miles up the road. She had left three hours earlier- their oven was out and Maeve had cooked them a meatloaf.
Rationally, Maeve would be back soon. Rationally, he wasn’t hungry- he had made eggs right after she left and had a good late lunch. And, rationally, the branches scratching at the side of the house were just that.
But nothing was rational. His hair, thinning yet still present in wiry, whispy, whiteness had a few pieces standing at attention. His hand could barely control the shakes that his heart produced.
Bernard, the dog, started barking on the porch. John stepped outside to find Bernard, tail wagging, a kitten whimpering in the corner. He took a piece of jerky from the jar he kept between the chairs, and threaded it. Bernard was all attention, but he sent him off into the yard with a snap and a point.
The kitten was smitten with the piece of jerky and John picked her up to his own amazement. He started singing a lullaby that he had sung each of his three children. Once inside, still holding her, he poured the gristle from the frying pan where the eggs had been into a bottle and attached a nipple.
Feeding it to the kitten, whose teeth pirced the nipple, he said, “Just a little.”
Maeve opened the door, closed it, and removed her jacket before she saw him.
“What do you have there?” she asked, voice weary.
“A little friend Bernard made.”
“It’s cute. Beth loved the meatloaf.”
“I’m glad.” He replied. Then his eyes focused on the window darkened by the night sky.
“I do wish Paulie, Georgia and Maggie-” He paused and swallowed. “Would visit again.”
“I do too.” She said, with more than a bit of...
Read moreI have been burned by this place so many times, I don’t know why I bothered giving them another chance. Last time I went here was right after Covid. Ordered through the drive through, was asked to pull around and there I sat for 30 MINUTES until I tried to go in to inquire what was taking so long and was met with a locked door, so I walked up to the drive through window and knocked. Someone came and I told them I was still waiting for my order, they asked what I ordered so I told them, they said hold on and went to talk to someone, then Came back and said it would be out in about 10 minutes. Another 20 FRIKKIN MINUTES go by and part of the order came out. They said they were out of the other stuff. They started to walk away until I called out and asked if they are going to refund me for the stuff that I PAID for and didn’t get. Only then did they say I could pull back around or walk up to the window to get refunded. I then had to remind them of what I didn’t get in order to get my refund. That was last time. THIS TIME, I ordered online for pick up. I arrived about five minutes before it said it would be ready and informed the worker at the counter if my name, order, and that I was here. Fast forward 20 minutes (15 minutes AFTER food was suppose to be done) and I inquire and am informed that no one let anyone know I was there, and that my order was still sitting in the printer (not started). Was also told that they are out of some of what I ordered but that they would “hook me up” for the inconvenience. Eventually got my food not too long after that. The “hooking me up” was a couple of free chicken tenders. Wow, gee, thanks. PLEASE DO THIS WHOLE CITY A FAVOR AND CLOSE THIS PLACE DOWN AND GIVE US A POPEYES OR BOJANGLES. I will never be back to this KFC. Rude employees who suck at their jobs and...
Read moreI wanted to take a moment to comment about the professionalism at this establishment.
I’m a Captain, U.S. Army, and my Soldiers are here at Fort Knox conducting rigorous training so I wanted to order two 16 piece meals at this establishment.
The woman taking my order seemed annoyed that I would ask for so much chicken. She began lamenting about how orders that big are typically call ins and they were not prepared to give me that much chicken.
She further informed me that it would be a 35 minute wait while attempting to make me feel guilty for ordering that much chicken.
I proposed a scenario to her in which of there were two customers ordering 16 piece meals back to back, what would be the difference?
She seemed annoyed and side stepped my question and repeated that my order was too big and I quote, “you would be taking all our chicken”.
Pardon me for offering to buy all your chicken, I thought that was the point of the business, to sell chicken.
I’ve never experienced an establishment chastising me for wanting to order food from them, but no worries I took my business to Lee’s chicken and won’t be returning to this location.
I asked the cashier at Lee’s if they had any issues with me ordering 32 pieces of chicken and she was friendly and said, “not at all we have several cooks here and we’ll have that chicken ready for you in no time.” Guess what, it took less than 4 minutes!
Thank you for making my Soldiers wait longer on their chow KFC, giving me attitude and...
