I used to love Seafood USA--I bought all my fish from them for 15 years. The Paoli store is still good, but Wayne has gone from so-so to "never go there" status with me. There are a couple of the employees who always made me feel uncomfortable, with their unfriendly demeanor, but what I can't put up with is being sold spoiled fish.
A few months ago, the Wayne Seafood USA had something they called "Hawaiian Butterfish", and the filets looked like sea bass but cost 1/3 less. It was delicious, alright, but there was another price--the "butter" (fat) that gave the industry's marketing people the idea for the name is indigestible (like Olestra). As some might remember, Olestra never became very popular, because it gives you diarrhea.
After the unpleasantness I experienced the night, I looked up the fish on the Internet, and I found that it's well-known as unsuitable for human consumption in more than tiny portions (like one or two pieces of sushi). And Seafood USA was selling full dinner-portion filets! Still, I went back, because the Wayne location is convenient for me.
Then, a few weeks ago, I bought some soft-shell crabs. It didn't dawn on me until I got home that they're supposed to be alive. The man who packaged them for me (one of the unfriendly ones) remarked, "Oh, one's even alive." Great, but the other four were dead. And still, they have the nerve to advertise "Live Crabs" on a banner on the front of the building.
I wanted to give them another chance, so I went back the next week and bought a dozen little-neck clams. It's not unusual for one out of a dozen to be dead (which is why mom-and-pop seafood shops used to give you an extra one), but this same guy just grabbed them and shoved them in the bag, not taking care to notice that two were dead.
The last straw was today, when they had some firm-looking haddock filets at a good price. But sure enough, when I took them out of the bag to cook them, they smelled spoiled. Sometimes the "off" flavor disappears after cooking, but this haddock tasted BAD.
Don't buy anything from the Seafood USA in Wayne. They...
Read moreI bought 3 quarts of lobster stock and a lemon on NYE for lobster risotto. On New Years Day and I notice I was charged $89.47 instead of the $8.97 I was told the lobster stock costed. I realized I needed the lemon after he said $8.97 and figured the total bill would be $10. On 1/2 I felt sick and tested positive for Covid and I wasn't able to address the issue with them in person until 1/9. When I asked for help the ownership essentially chuckled/laughed at me that "there is no possible way to figure this out" and "I would have to be able to prove this is the case". As someone that also runs a small business I could never imagine treating a customer so poorly and dismissing their concerns after charging them 10x the proper amount. Thankfully I paid with American Express and will be disputing the charges and never returning. I will gladly drive the extra 5 minutes to Bywood in Bryn Mawr where the service and prices...
Read moreStay away!!! Shopping here is a dice game. I called asking if they had mussels in stock which they said they did. Unfortunately when I arrived a lot of the mussels they had in the display where opened which is not good. Eating open mussels is a guarantee to get violently sick. The clerk said they had more mussels in the back and she assured me she would not put those in my bag. As I shopped around I trusted her word. When I got home I had to throw the whole bag away as more than half were open and the whole bag was slimy.
Beyond Disappointed they would pass off such poor quality for the price they are charging. Be very aware as expect to get sick eating such low quality seafood. The food handling practice here is less than sub par....
