Other reviews mentioning there’s just one guy running the whole operation here- and I can confirm, that’s an important detail to understand before visiting Fu Kee Express.
I called in my order on a Saturday night. The first call went unanswered, but my second attempt a few minutes later got through. The owner took my order and even agreed to make my General Tso’s Chicken “SUPER” spicy. He told me it’d be ready in 20 minutes.
When I arrived, I wasn’t totally sure how things worked. The front door opens into a small waiting area (with a sign asking you not to wait inside), and the rest of the restaurant is blocked off with tables. There’s no counter or staff - I was just literally standing there wondering why this is the configuration in a relatively large casual restaurant space. I watched the owner scurrying around in the kitchen for a few minutes before stepping outside to finish the wait. After a bit, he brought orders to the front, about 30 minutes total from when I’d called, then taking orders from other customers patiently waiting.
The food was excellent. The chicken was crisp and flavorful, and the meat itself tasted like good quality- not stringy or chewy at all. The “SUPER” spice level was pretty bold, enjoyable but not extremely spicy.
Overall, Fu Kee Express is a one-man show with great food that’s worth the wait. I’ll come again, just not on a Saturday night or when...
Read moreIt really is a shame there’s not a special 6 th star that you can give certain places that really are extra special. Just go and you’ll see. If you have any personality at all, just chum it up with the owner/cashier/cook and you’ll get it. He’s a riot. He sorta has the intensity of the crazy soup guy from Seinfeld about his craft, but just really genuinely friendly instead. And the food is top level as every other review on here says. Takes 15 minutes easily to arrive, but it goes by fast as you probably will be entertained somewhat by the antics of the owner. When we were there he ran up and locked the front door as the line i presume was getting too long. He flies back by my table and says something like “why you still eating 30 minutes later”. I’m like dude, it’s delicious i’m trying not to inhale this orange chicken and lo mein. My guess is he asks ever orderer if they want spicy. I would just say yes to that. It seemed to definitely make the lo mein superior. Will be difficult from here to go to any other chinese place in the Triangle for me after this experience. Lastly, the irony occurred to me that this joint is called Fukee “express”. Nothing express about it. You're gonna wait 20 perhaps even 30 for your food easily, especially if 3-4 groups in front of you. So don’t go during...
Read moreOk I normally go to Chopstix but apparently they are closed on Mondays so we stumbled across this restaurant because wangs kitchen is a no go!
So on to the review, the owner was very funny and personable with my husband, they joked with one another which was very pleasant. The food was very good. I had general tso chicken shrimp fried rice and eggrolls. The general tso didnt taste like any ive had before BUT that isnt a bad thing, it was very delish. The only problem i had was i would of liked the chicken to be fried harder it was a bit soggy AGAIN dont let that deter you it was very delish. The rice was very good and YELLOW omggggg i have want old Chinese rice forever. I grew up with chinese rice not like some restaurants today who take white rice and color it by adding soy sauce but being a beautiful golden brown color it was refreshing to see that beautiful rice. The shrimp were beautifully big butttt over cooked but thats never gon stop me from eating shrimp lol....As for the oil everyone is talking about yes they are correct this food isnt as oily as most Chinese restaurants. I would recommend this...
