La Basil Thai Cuisine — Restaurant in Ramona

I was incredibly excited to check out Ramona’s newest restaurant recently, La Basil Thai Cuisine! Upon entering I was immediately struck by how stunning the place is. They really did a great job. It no longer has the funeral home vibe that Mamma Rosa’s once had. There was ample staff on deck that were all welcoming, genuine and thoughtful. They seemed really interested in feedback and continuous improvement. While they have their licensing in place for adult beverages, their distribution channel is not yet pressurized so I settled for water. Comes in an artful carafe and empty glasses with no ice. For an appetizer my son and I shared an order of Cream Cheese Wontons. The wontons were very tasty and beautifully presented. Most of them did seem to be lacking any discernable amount of cream cheese however. I could have still eaten about three plates of them.

For main dishes, my son ordered the Panang Curry and he enjoyed it although prefers the Pinto version which he considers the gold standard. I ordered the Krapao Ground Chicken which is not on the menu at Pinto and I’ve been wanting to try it. Made with stir fried ground chicken, garlic, chili and basil leaves over rice. Such a delicious dish that I would highly recommend. Most Thai restaurants use an arbitrary numerical scale of spice level when ordering. Usually 0-5 or 1-10 or something like that. Here it is simply mild, medium or spicy hot. Overall this is a real nice establishment with fantastic potential. The vibe is decidedly more intimate than Pinto, perfect for a date night. I took my order to go so I can't speak to the service. The atmosphere was nice enough seeming on a first glance that it seems like a great place for a date night.

Food? The bar for Ramona Thai cuisine has been raised. Pad Thai is my personal litmus test, so to speak, for any Thai restaurant. It was great.

I ordered it with very hot spice and while it was fine for me I would have preferred more. They did provide me with extra dry chili in case it wasn't hot enough. Super appreciative of that!

I also ordered it with duck. I've had a lot of duck and only experienced it cooked well from another one other time. Their duck I had was great. Not dry. Not chewy. Tender. Flavorful. No bones but a little cartilage which I don't personally mind and munch just fine but it did give me pause before determining it...

We were so hungry and craving phat thai , I tried this place for the first time and honestly I was expecting it worth it , well it wasent i order combo path thai and i received only chicken , i also ordered tom kha shrimp soup and there was 3-4 small shrimps and 3 vegetables cut in half the cup was not even full with broth and tasteless , also veggie egg rolls they were tiny , and potstickers order and beef fried rice . The food was ok not the best in taste and definitely not enough for the price your paying for each plate , it was not worth what i payed which was to me very expensive I payed over $90 bucks for my order.
