If can deal with the crappy construction traffic on Highway 50, Jang Su is a hidden gem that's got some of the best Korean food in Northern California.
The restaurant is tucked away in an unassuming-looking shopping center near Mather Airport. There's both an Autozone and an O'Reilly's in the same parking lot; Don't come expecting a Maitre 'd. It's a quiet little authentic hansikjib, that does it's job perfectly; tons of savory knock-out flavors in hearty portions with a big selection of soju and lager. Eat, drink, and be merry.
When the meal starts with banchan, you know you're in for the real deal. A delicious variety of pickled, marinated, and fermented fruit & veggie bites that are like a circus for your tastebuds; snacking on banchan while chatting and drinking soju with friends is a quintessential part of the Korean dining experience.
But the main thing that drew us here was the galbi jjim. An authentic hot-pot galbi jjim is kind of rare, and even fewer knock it out of the park, but Jang Su hits on all fronts. A sizzling cauldron of slow-braised beef ribs that fall off the bone and melt in your mouth, coupled with a savory mix of hearty potatoes, carrots, and tteokbokki in a rich broth. An absolute culinary stunner. Bring help, it's a lot of food.
We filled things out with a kimchi spam fried rice and a toasty clay-pot bibimbap, both also absolutely delicious. We needed boxes. I don't know if they had dessert, but we wouldn't have had room if they did.
When we got the bill, I was shocked; I thought it was going to be a lot more. This meal would give San Francisco's Daeho a run for it's money, at half the price. With the quality and generous portions, it felt like a steal.
Don't let the humbleness of this restaurant fool you. If you're looking for really good food, this is some of the best in the Sacramento region. I may not have Michelin stars to hand out, but if I did, this would get a nod. The prices are fair, the staff is nice, and the food is amazing; that's a...
Read moreLOVE this Korean restaurant. I've tried so many Korean restaurants in Sacramento and I can confidently say this one is the best one in town. The customer service is exceptional and they are super friendly. I would encourage everyone to come and try this place!
We've came so many times and tried almost everything on the menu. All the dishes we've tried are always so fresh and tasty. Our favorites are the Galbi, Gabli tang, seafood pancake, and Galbi jim. Honestly, all their dishes are pretty delicious though.
The side dishes are awesome as well. I love my vegetables and their side dishes always satisfies me. AND at the end of your meal, they also provide fruits! It's great! You literally get all different types of food (protein, vegetables, fruits) at...
Read moreI do not recommend getting take out as you won’t get to enjoy the side dishes or the fruit served at the end of the meal or the great customer service. I’ve dined in three times now and really enjoyed my experience every time. The food is pricey (but what isn’t these days?), so come when you want to treat yourself. They were very friendly to my 1 year old son and gave him treats. Even gave us wet wipes (saving us a trip out to the car). The servers are very considerate to people unfamiliar with Korean cuisine and were very patiently helping us with the menu when we needed it. Food is very flavorful and tasty. My favorite is probably the kimchi rice. I order it every time! Way better than Oz...
