Great food, crappy service/environment. The food at the barn is great, but to even get into the restaurant you have to shoulder your way past a whole crowd of people gathered outside the door smoking and/or just standing around, even though there's a wooden deck area to gather in directly off to the side. Once we got inside we weren't greeted by any waiter/host, though two waiters who were standing around kind of stared at us for a bit after we walked in.
Finally, without saying any kind of greeting, another waiter/host? walks up, grabs some menus without saying anything to us, and then just asks, "Do you guys want to eat in the dining room?" like we were inconveniencing him or something. We were escorted to a table right by the outside door that everyone was coming in/out of, despite there being plenty of other tables of the same size empty in the room. We were there a good ten-fifteen minutes before our waitress took our drink order.
Our drinks came out, and were fine(though the chocolate soda machine wasn't functioning - not the waitress' fault, of course, but a bit of a letdown). We ordered our meals, and our appetizers came out promptly. The food was VERY good, I had delicious macaroni and cheese with chorizo, and my wife had the loaded baked potato skillet. Unfortunately, before we were even a third of the way through enjoying our apps, our entrees were brought out. We aren't slow eaters, either! I don't know what we would have done if we had four people at our table instead of two, because we barely had room to fit all the food that was sitting at it!
We ate a bit more of our appetizers before leaving them half-finished and starting in on our entrees before they got cold. I had the meatball pizza pie (delicious), and my wife had the chicken bruscetta pasta(also delicious). We ended up wrapping both our entrees and our unfinished appetizers to go. I would have liked to have stayed and finish watching the game, but we were getting tired of loud people (and staff) coming and going through the door to the deck constantly during our meal. It's worth noting that the best service we received during the evening was from the gentleman who wrapped our food for us.
It's a shame we're wary of going back to The Black River Barn after our first visit, because the food was really quite excellent. Unfortunately, the eating experience was not. They do offer a "to-go" service, you might want to look into that, so you get all the upsides...
Read moreTruly disappointed with this place, and recommend you do not come here. They incorrectly charged my credit card for MUCH more than I was supposed to be charged for. My partner and I both gave our cards to the waiter, and told him how much to put on each card, he repeated what we told him- so, we said correct, and he came back with our cards- both of us had a receipt and wrote our totals on it. So, how in the world can you be so air headed as to charge one credit card the entire amount of the meal? What if that was someone I couldn’t easily contact again that I was having dinner with to repay me?
I’ve called and spoken to a women named Tammy who is barely sincere in her apologies and stated “this happens sometimes” so it seems like a regular occurrence. She told me she would refund me and charge the other card. However, I haven’t even received my funds back, they aren’t even pending in my account. The way this was handled was really unprofessional. And, the fact that I am still paying for this after such a mistake is quite disgusting to me, especially because the food wasn’t even that good. We boxed up our food and took it home to throw out because our waiter was so incompetent, I didn’t even want to ask for something else. Just paid out bills and went home to eat our own food at home. Which we should’ve done in the first place.
Hope I do get my money back like Tammy said I would. Otherwise I’m reporting this to my credit card company. This was entirely a scam.
But like I said, I really recommend you go somewhere else if you want to sit down and relax and eat a good meal.
Edit: 4 days have gone by. Still nothing. What disgusting people. Now I have to pay a fee for going over my credit limit. Which was not my fault at all, or my intentions last night. I was supposed to be charged $21. But was charged $76. Appalling.
Edit: 5 days. Still waiting. Every time I call they tell me Tammy isn’t available.
Edit: on Nov 20th they refunded me $76 and CHARGED ME $50 SOMETHING WHEN I ONLY OWE $21.
They made me drive to the barn to sit down with the general manager named Andrew who is telling me how my bank account works with no resolve and they still made me pay for my meal which is funny. No wonder the reviews are so low on this place. I drove 40...
Read moreWe just bought a house near Black River Barn and had been excited to try them out. Today we finally did. We have 3 small kids so we ordered takeout via Doordash rather than sitting down to eat so I cannot review the establishment itself, only the food and my experience with the staff members who answered the phone.
The burger was decent. The angus patty was a bit dry and not cooked medium like I like (too rare) but the roll was great. I am typically just happy when I don't see shredded lettuce on a burger so that wasn't even a big deal. One thing I thought was a bit lazy (especially considering I tipped a takeout order) was the burgers were not assembled, most places assemble and stick a toothpick through but I still wasn't holding anything against them.
When I saw we were missing sides I called them up in good faith to see if something was left behind. I was passed off to who I presume is a manager and they said they chose which sides in our order to give us and if we want "extra sides" we "would have to pay for them." This was surprising considering there were no instructions on the app to select only one side - I had presumed it was the standard 2 sides per meal and selected 2 sides per meal. The manager seemed to think I was trying to game the system or something. There should be clear instructions online to select only one side if those are the rules or an option to add the "extra sides" for an upcharge.
When my husband arrived to pick up the order he was not informed of the situation with the sides, it wasn't til we got the food home that we saw we were low on food - one of the sides was for the kids whom at this point only had chicken fingers to eat - so as you can imagine it was a disappointing experience for the...
