Allergy Warning untrained staff
I do not like to leave reviews like this, but our visit to California Surf Club was alarming.
We were served an appetizer (on patio) with pesto and were told it had no nuts. Luckily we were careful, noticed it and informed the server. reminded them we had a nut allergy. Then, inside seated, came a tostada that had no allergy warning on the menu, so we assumed it was safe. After taking a bite, we asked the server about ingredients—they weren’t sure. we asked for a manager or chef, they said “you might want to be careful with that tostada.”
That is not an acceptable response to an allergy question.
Turns out it had pistachios, which caused an allergic reaction. We had to leave our event early because of this. Extremely disappointing and dangerous. Required medical attention and a ruined evening.
The staff clearly isn’t trained on food allergies, and the menu lacks clear labeling. This was not just careless — it was dangerous.
If you or someone in your group has food allergies, be extremely careful. We won’t...
Read moreGreat concept, setting and creative use of space but really poor execution of food offering. You can tell this is a work in progress the staff is incredibly nice and friendly but it is evident the management of the FoH staff is lacking good direction and leadership. The beverage program is decent but could benefit from a few more Red wine options and some minor tweaks to the specialty cocktails. The menu has a broad and well curated offering but across the board the food came out bland and seemingly of low quality. Watch out for the metal skewers my they come out hot without warning or protection so the customer can and did burn themselves trying to get the meat off. Our table was large and we had to wait an extraordinary amount of time for a few of the groups entrees to come out . This place has a lot of potential but the food needs to come up in quality significantly before I go back and the staff though friendly and willing need training. I am pulling for them would love to see enough positive reviews going forward to compel me to give it...
Read moreI was actually on my way to R10 when I realized California Surf Club was already open at 1 PM (a rare treat since they usually open at 4). I’m so glad I stopped in because I ended up having the best time ever—it’s definitely going to be my new Friday go-to spot, and maybe even weekends too since they open earlier then.
TJ and Tegan (with a T!) took incredible care of me. While I was there, a friend texted me after seeing my location and said, “I’ve never been there—are you still around?” Of course, I told them yes, and I’m glad we stayed!
I had their twist on an Old Fashioned (so good), a Caesar salad (simple but delicious), and another spritz—kind of like a Hugo spritz, though I can’t remember the exact name. Everything hit the spot.
The atmosphere was fun, the service was top notch, and we even enjoyed a live band. Overall, it was a perfect experience—five out of five. Can’t complain, can’t wait to come back and I’ll definitely...
