Location: Prime Regent Square (South Braddock stretch) Located on same side as Map Room, Dee's. 61B bus accessible, parking on corner in lot across from McBrooms. Police presence heavy around 2am at both gas stations (cop block.) I don't endorse drunk driving nor a police state.
Facility: What you see is what you get, don't like it... fine leave. The bartenders are all aces. Friendly to the point of a second family. Deb and Dan are some of the most patient and kind people I have ever met. They have 3 pool tables (one has shallow pockets... that one is for the amateurs) at $5 an hour, 2 dart boards at $.50 a game as well as shuffle board. Prepare to part with your id as collateral for everything coming back in one piece and in case you break something. TV's everywhere and not all are locked so ask to put a game on beside your group.
Clientele: This place, again, has a family feel. Legend has it Grandpa (Murphy) opened the bar and has been passed down. It is an Old Irish Pub and nobody cares your background as long as you are respectful and tip. It's cash only so hit the ATM before coming. Always bring more than you think you will need, you are guaranteed to make some new friends and end up buying blackjack shots if you get smoked on the pool table.
Music: This place could be in a magazine for one of Pittsburgh's greatest melting pots. You have old heads who have been coming here for years, hipsters that try to sneak in a vape here and there (no longer is smoking allowed), movers/shakers and the occasional one-and-done. The diversity of the colorful jukebox waves is a testament to tolerance of every person that comes through the door. I have been caught climbing a chair every now and then to Shazam a song (be careful they spin.)
Food: Murphys is tolerant of bringing in food from the outside. Clean up after urself and tip heavy for convenience. El Burro, Thai Palace, Square Cafe, Ease, Dees Dogs are on the block. Nobody will bat an eye for eating outside food at the bar, but ask before bringing other food in as a courtesy. Note that they do offer bar popcorn, homemade sandwiches, chips, gum, jerky and nachos. All at unbeatable prices!
Drink: Ask about specials. Yeungling mugs are cheap. Pitchers are cheap. Craft Beer selection is limited. About 10 drafts (to my recollection) and about 15 bottle selection all pretty standard import/domestic. Basic liquor selection all wells available. I have been on them for a long time about getting a good scotch, but they keep only Dewars White Label and J&B if you know to ask. Good cheap whiskey such as Old Grandad, Old Crow, Evan Williams, Beam and Jack.
In conclusion: Cheap beer, liquor and shots reasonable price. Diverse crowd/music. Good hearted staff. Pool tables/Darts/ShuffleBoard/TVs. Great place for locals to watch sports games. Inexpensive good time with a 5-star meal nearby you can grab...
Read moreI had booked a party at another local bar for about 50 people. That bar double booked and did not have space for us. After panicking I decided to call Murphys to see if they had space. The owners were so wonderful and welcoming. It was last minute and they welcomed us with open arms.
About 50 people piled in there with less than a 15 minute notice with all of the food, cake, decorations and snacks. The owner came in and asked if there was anything she could do to help. They only had one bartender and were so efficient and welcoming to us. The owner hopped behind the bar and did anything that she could to help the last minute influx in people. She checked on us throughout the night and let us take over the back room for the entire night. It turned into an absolutely wonderful and successful party.
I will always remember the graciousness of the owners and staff and how they truly saved the day in a very unfortunate and stressful situation. They earned the loyalty of so many more customers because of their warm accommodations. We will be back as much as possible! ...
Read moreLots of room to hang out with friends. Several pool tables for use at an hourly rate (no annoying coin operated tables). Nice quiet dive with consistently friendly workers and patrons. Lots of TVs all over so it's a great spot to watch sports. Pretty much my go-to spot to have a few drinks with friends and talk since it's not super loud. Some negatives are that it is cash only and...
