I went to El Peñol 2 located on 570A Broadway in Revere, MA. We had a true Columbian food feast here!
For drinks I tried their jugos naturales en augua (nature flavored water). They have so many flavors to try (mango, papaya, guava etc.) and you can get milk versions of them too. I tried their blackberry water and it was super delicious 9/10.
For appetizers we had fried plantains 7/10, yucca frita (yucca fries) 7/10 and mixed ceviche platter 7/10. The mixed ceviche platter was quite the sight! It had shrimp, scallops, octopus and avocado. If you are in the mood for some seafood I recommend trying this dish.
For main dishes we had the carne en crema de champinoñes (beef in mushroom sauce) 8/10, the picadillo de pollo (marinated chicken) 7/10 and pescado frito (whole fried fish) 7/10. For any of the dishes you can also get a side of rice and beans, fries, salad, or fried plantains.
For dessert we got flan 7/10 and churros with ice cream 7/10. This place is very affordable and provides great portion sizes. I can see why they have two other locations (Boston and Brookline!).
Next time I come back (or perhaps do delivery!) I want to explore more of their drinks and of course get plantains/yucca fries.
Food: 7/10 Affordability:...
Read more**Knocked a couple stars off because it's extremely frustrating that I always have an issue when I ask for none of the catsup & extra hot sauce in the place of it!! I ordered 24 empanadas & was given only 8 hot sauces despite very specifically asking for hot sauce in the place of catsup! The last time the girl tried to charge me $2.50 extra! 24 empanadas equivalents to 6 orders of empanadas! How is only 8 sauces even an option? I should have gotten at least 12 (2 per order!) I always tip well but have vowed to in the future just order & pay for the extra hot sauce & NOT tip since it's so hard to get the order right! I've asked in English & Spanish & it is NEVER right! I stand by my review if their food though. It is delicious Colombian cuisine but customer service & consistency matters
This place is consistently delicious. I love the Paisa plate. My favorite is their empanadas! Stuffed with potatoes & alot of meat. Four of them cost under $6 and they come with fresh, delicious hot sauce....
Read moreIt was our first time ordering food from this place and it was AMAZING. We are not Colombians but I love Colombian food and I introduced my husband to it and he loved it. We went in and place our orders. Small place but comfortable. The decor was simple and beautiful, good taste. The service was really friendly. They get busy, well at least they were taking lots of orders over the phone and people were coming to. THE FOOD WAS AMAZING. Awesome flavor. Huge portions, at least for us. I only ate half and my husband did as well. He order the Casuela and I had the bandeja Paisa but the Peñol one... Really, really, really good. I have to save some for next day since it was a lot for me. We are definitely coming back. Lots of Colombian places around. We tried a different one before but nothing like this one at all.. Good...
