We went to Unrefined Bakery thinking that it was the best place we could buy a quality, clean, refined sugar free, and kinda organic premade cake for our daughter’s 3rd birthday. The cake we chose had a lot of no’s checked (no gluten, no soy, etc…), but not an actual ingredient label. I now recognize our error, but at the time we gave Unrefined Bakery the benefit of the doubt that they were being truthful in their marketing and statements. Upon taking our first bites of the cake everyone in our family felt surprised by the taste. It was too good and familiar to not contain refined sugar. Sure enough, our suspicions were right. It wasn’t until after we had visited a second time for quick dessert, that we had the idea to stop back in for a celebratory treat. This time though, I asked my husband to call ahead and make absolutely sure that they did not use refined sugar, like they said on their social media accounts and on their website.
They use honey and agave in their paleo options, but the keto, standard and vegan all have raw demerara cane sugar.
It is well known that raw cane sugars, such as demerara, do in fact undergo a high degree of refining. It takes 1-meter of sugar cane to make 1tsp of crystallized sugar. Leaving a little molasses in may be a little better than sugar that is bright white, but it doesn’t make it unrefined.
I first reached out to the company with my disgust in their deception in marketing, and the daughter owner responded by email. I was met with excuses and claims that ingredients are listed and available all over. That’s simply not true as proven by the photo I took of my daughter’s cake lid. They will identify things that are vegan, paleo, keto, or standard, but they don’t disclose the full ingredient list publicly. A person shouldn’t have to ask to know what’s in their food. If they truly put ingredient labels on their products as they claim, we wouldn’t be having a problem because we would never have spent a dime there.
Too, Taylor disclosed how poorly trained their employees are, stating they don’t even know how to identify a refined sugar. That they’re not educated on the ingredients contained in their products, which is the very foundation their company is based upon - supposed ingredient quality and integrity.
I abhor deceptive marketing practices and will not be shy about it. I did notice they changed their Facebook bio. I mean maybe they should receive a pat on the back for assuming some responsibility?
We’ve since called around to every vegan baker and while they all use refined cane sugar, I appreciated they were honest about it!
If they all use refined cane sugar anyway, there are far better bakeries to choose from, if you’re cool with that! Far as we go, looks like we will be baking at home...
Read moreThe cake was beautiful, but it was regrettably gross. I ordered a vegan vanilla lemon cake for my mother's birthday, and we were all disappointed. We had chunks of baking soda with the few mouthfuls taken. Much like cardboard in taste and texture, it tasted grainy, stiff and strangely dry. I was shocked of the quality given how pricey it was. I never had a cake I didn't finish, I have a big sweet tooth and I can't say I'm terribly picky. I've had my fair share of failed homemade baked goods but they still tasted like food. I so badly wanted to like the cake, but the awkward silence that followed our collective first bite spoke more than any words could. I was mortified and embarrassed having failed to deliver a decent cake for my mom on her very special day. She deserves better than this. I am now sitting amongst my siblings as they have given up their slices for equally disparaging complaints and jokes. Despite the quality of cake, customer service was top teir...
Read moreAwful experience and will not be going back. They wrote the incorrect writing on my birthday cake. When the cake was being picked up, not only was the wrong writing on it but there was a word that was not spelled correctly. They did not have an artist in shop but tried to fix it and made it worse. I had to wipe off all the lettering when I got home and spend 2 hours using my circuit to fix the writing on the top of the cake. When we called to get a resolution, the same guy who took the order and messed it up was not helpful. He was condescending and never once apologized regarding the error. His resolution was that we had to drive from Dallas to Richardson to get a $20 GIFT CARD. What a joke. Also, the cake did not taste right. I have ordered bday cakes from here every year and I will not continue after this horrible service. I would love for an actual manager to reach out to me for a...
