I lived directly behind Dagmars when it was located on Menaul many years ago. I used to walk over on weekends for breakfast or for their lunch specials. It was a small place but the atmosphere was inviting, and Dagmar was usually around talking with customers. I loved their French toast and knockworst. I think they had a “German breakfast” too that had a few different sausages, eggs, and the German potatoes. I don’t think I ever had a bad meal or experience there.
I had heard about Dagmar’s passing recently on Facebook. I was aware there was new ownership. I honestly had not been to Dagmars since they moved to Rio Rancho, but I have been wanting to go. I finally decided to make the trip to check things out.
I have to say I was a bit disappointed. The food was good (No French toast or German breakfast ) but still a pretty good breakfast sandwich. The service was another story. The man at the counter (I guess he’s the new owner?) felt extremely pushy in his interactions with customers. Instead of being able to sit down and look over the menu, it was put in front of you at the cash register all while he looks at you impatiently waiting to take your order and repeatedly asking if you are ready to order. It almost feels like they don’t even want you to look at the menu. It was so uncomfortable that I forgot to order a drink with my meal. As I headed back to the dining area, I noticed the table with the silverware and napkins. A serve yourself type environment. I’m not a big fan of this, as I left a decent tip, the same percentage I would leave at a dine in restaurant, but didn’t really receive any sort of service aside from the meal preparation. The dining room was really noisy and it made it hard to hear my boyfriend and vice versa. Overall the service was disappointing. I think if I go again I will look at the menu online and...
Read moreI'm very hesitant to write any type of critical review, especially about a local business, so I want to begin by making it perfectly clear that the quality of the food continues to be excellent, I'm very happy that the original owner's legacy remains in place. I was just very disappointed with the service I received from the new owner. From the moment I walked in it was a very strange, dismissive attitude, almost like I wasn't welcome there. I thought maybe it was just my imagination but the treatment was even more pronounced when it was time to place my order. It was really sad because this was my first time back since the bakery reopened and I was super excited to have breakfast and get some delicious strudels to start my morning. It felt so uncomfortable and honestly abrasive that I decided to skip ordering breakfast and just purchased a few pastries to go so as not to be rude. Take it for what it's worth, just a comment about a bakery from a random person on the Internet. Who knows, maybe I just caught the guy on a bad day. If you are trying to decide whether to check out Dagmar's for the first time I would actually encourage you to do so, their food is delicious. Unfortunately for me I'm the kind of person who cares a bit more about treatment, politeness, and manners more than a delicious, delicious strudel (did I mention how delicious these strudels are?). Hopefully this was just an anomaly and not the norm, and your experience is more...
Read moreI've been here a few times and the baked goods are always fresh, sweet and savory. They don't always include prices on everything so you're surprised when you end up paying $40+ for a few pastries. I enjoyed their food and wanted to support local businesses so I didn't mind paying that price however due to my last experience, I won't be returning. For Valentine's Day we went to the bakery to satisfy our sweet tooth. They had several strudels with only the chocolate flavor strudel having a sign with the price of $20. I only brought $40 cash with me. We finally decided on the strawberry and cream cheese strudel. The middle aged woman that cashed us out, a red haired woman, told me the total was $32 and change. I asked her about the sign that said $20 and she said that was only the chocolate kind of strudel. I was enjoying looking at the other pastries and didn't realize I had only handed her a $20. She didn't say anything, she looked at me coldly then said again it's $32. That was my fault but I gave her the other $20. She handed me the change without a word. No thank you or have a nice day. No basic customer service skills. So you know Dagmar, we can go get pastries anywhere. Local business owners should be grateful. Needless to say, I went to Delectable Baking Co this weekend and the pastries...
