I was very impressed with the quality and service of everything we got. The steak dinner was very tender, juicy, and flavorful - better than most steaks I've tried in Rochester even though this one was more affordable! The mash that came with the steak was also impressive - the intentional potato peels that were present added some bite and texture - NOT just bland, boring potatoes. The zucchini/squash weren't watery and served as a pallette cleanser between the meat and potatoes.
OKAY - everyone needs to try the sauerkraut perogies. We are usually skeptical when trying native Russian foods at non-Russian restaurants and as usual, not expecting much flavor or homey vibes BUT THESE THINGS ARE PERFECT. We didn't know what mettwurst was at first but realized it's kalbassa and were so excited. The smokey and salty flavor from the mettwurst complimented the hints of gouda and sour sauerkraut. That flavor combination is not something we grew up with but were so impressed by!
The chocolate cappuccino muffin we got was sooooo moist - the best muffin/cupcake/cake texture ever. The impression that we got was that they know their baked goods because the cornbread that came with the salad was the perfect, moist texture as well (I hate to say it bit a couple places here in Roch do not know how to make moist, fresh cornbread or cake and this is not one of them). I understand now why so many people just come in for the muffins.
The Rotterdam was fluffy and full of flavor and color as well. The hollandaise sauce was what tied everything together - perfect light texture that blended all the veggies and pannekette together.
Service was efficient even though we came during an obviously busy time and the server was nice and brought out our drinks/refills before we could even ask.
The only thing I wasn't excited about was the huge chunks of cucumber and two large onion rings on the side salad - maybe that's how some people like salad but I would have preferred to have bite sized peices uniformly mixed into the salad. Other than that the salad and dressing was very fresh.
Everything looked so good on the menu I just will have...
Read moreMy waitress, Jessica, was lovely and provided great service. She was very busy and running her tail end off, but was smiling and on top of it the whole time. I never ran out of anything. I ordered the California omelette and substituted mushrooms for tomatoes, sourdough toast, hash browns and coffee. The coffee was a medium roast with a good flavor and I loved that she left a whole carafe of it on the table so I could pour more at my leisure. The omelette was good. Plenty of fresh veggies inside. What made it great was the smoked Gouda inside. The sourdough toast wasn't very "sour". I thought at first that she'd accidentally brought me plain white toast. I got a small zing of sour in the aftertaste. The hash browns were good. There was both soft and crunch to them. The only hot sauce they have is Tabasco red and green. I got a good amount of food for the money this morning. However, I would caution people to be wary of some of the menu items. I came here once for lunch with my ex boyfriend. We each ordered a tuna melt and fries lunch. I don't remember exactly the total. Just that it was almost $30 with tip. The "sandwich" was open faced. So, basically, for that amount of $, we each got one piece of bread with some tuna on top and a handful of fries. I just remember thinking I could have made the same exact thing at home for less than $10 for the both of us combined and that I had just flushed almost $20 down the toilet. Spent $17.33 today before tip. Kind of expensive for breakfast for one, but there was a lot of food and Jessica was great. This place has yummy food, great service, sometimes OK prices and I'll be returning. I just wish there were some healthier, vegetarian and vegan options. They upcharge you $0.99 to have egg whites instead of regular eggs. How can you justify charging more to remove a yolk? Long story short, eat here, it's great. Just watch how/what...
Read moreWe decided we were hungry for pancakes following a Rochester visit. I Googled and found Hollandberry Pannekoeken was highly rated. It's amazing to find a restaurant that remains open to celebrate 40 years! Reading that and the reviews about its authentic Pannekoeken Pancakes, we headed over.
You enter into a nice reception area on the ground level. We were quickly seated and quite impressed with how efficient all the staff were. The kitchen is open with bar seating. What stuck us was having a waiter or waitress dance and sing while bringing Pannekoeken to the tables. It definitely creates a fun atmosphere and memorable experience. They lavish the whipped cream and berries or bananas on top.
The portions are generous; enough for two or take home. We both thought the coffee was quality. I appreciated that oat milk and honey were options over daily and raw sugar for my coffee. They didn't just pour you a cup - they left a jug of each coffee type right at our table for refills.
For healthy dining, I ordered the Salmon Delight. I often order grains over the standard rice, but this salmon was served over the best 5-grain blend and steamed to perfection. The accompanying asparagus was a tad overdone, and the grilled zucchini was excellent.
The Pannekoeken and standard stack of pancakes are excellent. We also recommend the Egg Hollandaise with ham. It's just too much to eat if you go with the accompanying red potatoes. Very good sauce. We didn't expect a cocktail menu, but it exists.
Our waitress was very professional, quick, and pleasant.
There is a shared parking lot out front with other business entities in the strip mall. We had no problem parking even though it was the lunch hour. The combination of efficiency, great food, and stellar service make this restaurant one that I'll label as "Highly...
