Star Ocean Buffet — Restaurant in Rochester

This is an okay place for a buffet- I’m personally not a fan of Buffet food. It’s been setting a while and mass food as one would expect. With that in mind, they do have a large selection of sushi and sea food, especially in the evenings and on weekend evenings. However, the prices change depending on the day of the week too. You will pay anywhere from $14.99 to $18.99 depending on the time & day of week you visit. Unfortunate they don’t just have a single price. Kids 3-10 yes are a different price too. They also include the option to grab food to go/ charge by the pound/ounce. Nice salad 🥗 and soup area. Followed by fresh fruit and ice milk, with a handful of desserts. The appetizers like egg rolls, wan ton, crab Rangoon, pot stickers popcorn shrimp & French fries are offered too. The next section has both white sticky rice or brown rice. Numerous dishes like sweet sour chicken, General Tso‘s chicken, spicy beef, Teriyaki beef……and more. For those that are kids at heart- you will enjoy baked macaroni & cheese, bread sticks, and breaded fish. Often a fresh fish option two like salmon or Tilapia. Corn 🌽 , broccoli 🥦 , noodles, stir fry and shrimp fill the next section. The beck table is rolled Sushi with fresh topping for your own stir fry prepared as you wait. A drink is included with your buffet fee. There are loads of options. The staff is friendly and quick to refill drinks, remove dirty plates & bring fortune cookies 🥠 at the end of your meal. One of the worst Chinese buffets I've experienced. I don't know if it's just the day I went (but quality should be consistent) because I just don't understand the 5-star reviews. To each their own I guess.

I recently moved to Rochester from a primarily Asian city with an abundance of Chinese foods (and other Asian cuisines available) and was excited to find Chinese buffet near me. My expectations for buffets anywhere are always minimal, but I still enjoy them regardless, so I went in expecting just average. I was pleasantly surprised by how cheap the lunch price was, only to find out the quality of food reflected the price.

At Star Ocean Buffet, most foods tasted like it was just reheated from being frozen or have been sitting there for a few days and just reheated. The buns and shumai were dried out, the dumplings were breaking apart, and the char siu and other meats were so chewy. I never come to any buffets expecting 5-star quality food, but this has to be one of the worst buffets I've experienced. The restaurant itself was huge, but there were not many people there, and I can definitely see why. Unfortunately, I will not be coming back here and I do not recommend this restaurant.

Trigger warning I have an eating disorder. I love to eat a lot of practically anything. I tried the wontons the texture and flavor were wrong. I tried the sushi not only did I have trouble navigating the sushi bar that was unlabeled. This man behind it refuse to acknowledge me when I asked him if one of the sets of roles were California rolls. All but one of the roles were spicy so not super friendly to kids or those with the sensitive stomach like myself. They told me I was getting mountain dew and gave mellow yellow. Which would have been fine except I wanted the caffeine not the flavor. For this experience I paid $20 and the only thing that was somewhat edible was the weird ice cream and the overcooked garlic bread. I've yet to be impressed by a place being this bad by so much variety but it was horrible I will never willingly eat here again. Unless it's free and then I'm still not sure I would. The staff didn't seem to speak English the guy at the front desk seemed nice he tried to listen but I'm not quite sure he understood. It was really frustrating because I feel like a partial refund would have been appropriate me. I hope I find a better sushi buffet in town I usually go to them frequently....
