Had a terrible and great experience here. Came in for lunch 3-15-2019, it was packed! I grabbed a table, my wife and sons put in our order. She worked her way to the "pick up" line and waited and waited and waited, 40 minutes later she discovered they lost our order. We stopped in town on a road trip just to try this place out and we were all "starving" like only spoiled fat Americans can be "starving." Everyone apologized, they gave us a piece of cake to ease our pains and the manager paid for our meal. Now for the food, maybe we were delirious with hunger but everything was amazing! Top notch Chicago dogs, Italian beef sandwiches were incredible. We had been smelling them for almost an hour already and ate them in 2 minutes... And,,,,, chocolate cake milkshake.... OMG! So perfect and exactly like a chocolate cake blended with ice cream, hard to pull it through a straw. We shared it and grudgenly did we pass it to the anxiously waiting family member. The staff and manager saved our day and sent us off happy if a little late. We are in New Orleans now and loving it but I am making plans to stop by again on our way home. The Italian beef and that milkshake are haunting my dreams all the way down here in the Southland.

Disappointed in our visit for sure. We made the cashier very aware it was our first time at this chain. We do this to garner suggestions and perhaps guidance when ordering. We were met by a very rude, gum chewing, lip smacking young lady who insisted on asking us “is that it” after every item. We ordered a beer and soda, a kids meal, a specialty hot dog, an Italian beef (large) and some chocolate cake. The chocolate cake is actually our reason for visiting, we saw it in a documentary! The food was straight up not good. It was at best somewhere between room temperature and lukewarm. The fries were the same and did not taste fresh at all. The hot dog was eh, super cold from toppings. The Italian beef is not something I’d care to try again. Way overpriced for very little meat, no cheese or peppers and absolutely no Aus Jus. I’m not sure if that’s something I needed to add extra but it’s not like that at most places so that wouldn’t make sense. We were tempted to buy the beef an aus jus from the coolers by the beer to take home and make ourselves but felt it wouldn’t be good either after having our meal. We drove nearly an hour and the stars of the night were the ice cold tap beer in the chilled glass mug and the absolutely delicious, sweet, soft, fresh cake. I may give this place another shot in the future but with all the great reviews and hype, it was a disappointment and fail in my book. Poor Food temperature, poor portion size, extremely poor customer service and cleanliness of the inside of the location lands this at a 2 Star for now.

Portillo's, you have to do better. I've been eating Portillo's for 25 years since I lived in Chicago, and this was the worst experience so far. The Rockford location started out just like the experience I was used to. It has slowly declined over the last 3 years or so. Today, we ordered two burger combos dining in. The staff was lackluster and showed no sense of urgency or enthusiasm. I watched the burger patties roll out of the grill and sit for 5 whole minutes to be assembled. Then they put cold cheese on a lukewarm burger. Then, after the burgers were made (that took 3 minutes), I watched them sit in a bag on the counter for SEVEN minutes waiting for someone to put fries in the bag. If you've been keeping score, it took 15 minutes to get my order. And remember, most of the time, the food is waiting on the worker, the worker isn't waiting on the food. The gluttons for punishment we are, we decided to take home 2 pieces of cake. I figured they couldn't mess that up. I eat half of my lemon cake only to find mold in-between the layers. I am a huge Portillo's fan, but I will not be eating it in Rockford anymore.

Very busy Saturday late afternoon. Stood in line for a short time. Atmosphere is over the top with a Chicago deli theme. Lots of places to sit. I ordered Italian beef sandwich with sweet and hot peppers. Ordered it slightly wet which ment the bun was passed thru a gravy. Sat down and waited for my name to be called at pickup area. Was very short wait. The sandwich came wrapped tight in Deli paper. The sandwich was stuffed with beef, the bun was thin and not overpowering. The peppers were just the right amount. After my 2nd bite I realized why it was so busy. The sandwich was rich with Italian beef flavors almost made me want to order 1 to go. I had a difficult time eating the whole sandwich because it was so much meat. But I could not stop eating it. Very good take on a Chicago style Italian beef deli style sandwich. Worth a stop.
