March 2022 I was looking for a place that make cakes with taro paste filling, and this place delivered. I called in to ask and place a cake order. The lady I talked to on the phone was friendly, patient, and knowledgeable.
As it turns out, they offer various fillings and you can have 2 different fillings per cake if you want (their cakes are three layers). I don't remember all the fillings they offer, but they include taro, chestnut, a specific fruit, or a variety of fruit. For the cake itself, they offer vanilla, chocolate, or green tea flavor. And for the outside decorations, they offer various styles that are displayed on their website. I believe their cakes come in 6", 8", and 10", but I'm not completely sure. Price varies by cake size.
When we went to pick up the cake, the lady at the counter (different from the phone person) was very rude and curt. Nevertheless, we managed to get the cake without too much trouble. I was interested to note they included a bag on the side of the cake box, holding a plastic serving knife and a packet of long thin candles. Note the box opens from the sides and not the top.
The cake itself was exactly what I ordered: 8" green tea cake with taro filling, style B (it's supposed to be a sheep), and a birthday message. The message is chocolate on a "board" of white chocolate. The cake was delicious, though I was surprised at how dry and crumbly the taro filling was. And the green tea flavor in the cake was about the same as Japong's matcha cake (not much flavor). The frosting is whipped cream and the cake itself is light and fluffy. Pretty...
Read moreThis is a bread staple that should be on the corner of every suburban neighborhood. Individually wrapped, stuffed, bread buns with sweet milk powder, red bean, sweet ethereal coffee cream, minced pork meat floss, or any number of delicious fillings would satisfy anyone's whims for either sweet or savory morning breakfast or mid-day snack.
As you can see from the pic, I stock up. Particular favs that one cannot find in ANY other bread store are (1) stuffed roast pork buns, (2) milk powder stuffed buns, (3) Scallion and minced pork floss bun rolls. In fact, I think these three types of buns have remained un-copied, or hard to copy, by any other bread roll purveyor. In my opinion, these are portable and just that tasty compared to other stuffed buns/rolls like European meat pies, American donuts, etc. Now, it just isn't fair to compare sometimes since every culture has their own version of stuffed bread buns but it is quite baffling when asian bread stores like this has established in dozens of locations the West Coast and in so many parts of the world but yet it feels like there's a vacuum here in the tri-state DC metro area. There are only 2-3 places that I know of where I can buy stuffed asian bread buns like this.
There is definitely plenty of room for variety and hope that variety will increase to be honest because super-expensive, Americanized, croissants, diabetes-inducing bear-claws, and process-laden cinnamon rolls can only be tasty and good for so long before one realized that there is a need...
Read moreI consider it’s a blessing to have this store on my way to work, every Tuesday. $2.50 for 1 nice cup of fresh soy milk and 2 egg lava custard buns - Heaven! I cannot ask for a better treatment for such a small cost. The girls here are so friendly, so helpful. I think they know by heart what I want to order when I walk in nowadays. It makes me feel warmly welcomed every time.
A few specialties you cannot miss trying out at this amazing place: 1. Portuguese egg custards (If they are not hot when you get them at the shop, no worries - toast them in your conversational oven for 5 minutes. It will come out as delicious as when you get yours in that expensive shop in Portugal); 2. Pineapple paste fillings in anything (especially when it has a salted egg yoke inside); 3. Fruit cakes for special occasions (the lightest, freshest, yummiest you can get for your money); 4. Danish milky loaf (pre-sliced, ~8 slices/loaf), toast a slice to enjoy with milk/latte/tea will bring you so much happiness Scrumptious! I promise. 5. Sponge cup cakes (my cousin would ask for 6 of this when I’m on my way to visit her).
Something I miss that they don’t make anymore - Napoleon with candied orange peel mixed in the cream filling. They have the regular/popular Napoleons, which I’m not crazy about. This makes me sad. But I always on the look out, hoping some day they will bring that back.
I love this place! Try a little of everything they have to offer. I think you’ll love this...
