‘Eat The 77’: Ep 8- West Ridge- Kizin Creole Restaurant COMMENT ‘KIZIN’ to receive the exclusive promo in your inbox! So this was one of my first times in the West Ridge neighborhood of Chicago. It’s pretty far north, and it is adjacent to Rogers Park, which is the most northern community area in the city. I love West Ridge for its great diversity, but more specifically, they contain Chicago’s first Haitian restaurant. Kizin Creole is providing authentic Haitian cuisine without any of the frills! You’re getting the appetizers like marinads, and unlike the Jamaican patty, which is a common Caribbean staple, the Haitian patty uses a puff pastry as the vessel. They also use similar meats across the Caribbean, such as oxtail and goat, which were cooked to perfection in both of these dishes. If you’re looking for fresh tropical juices, they also have you covered with the soursop and passion fruit. AND, before you judge it, you should definitely try the Haitian mac & cheese. I know Caribbeans get a bad rap for their mac & cheese, but I actually think it’s a very unique spin and it has a much sharper cheddar flavor compared to American mac & cheese. But I’ll let you be the judge: comment ‘KIZIN’ for the exclusive promo and make sure to check them out!

Wow. What a great meal! I love Haitian Creole food. This was one of the best Bannann Peze(Fried Plantain) and Marinad (fried spiced fritters), Griyo (braised and then fried pork belly) with rice and beans all were amazing. In particular, the marinad is such a simple sounding side/app - but is a flavour-packed ball of fried dough! So good in fact, that our table ordered seconds of this dish to go with our dinner! I loved also the griyo (aka griot in French)! Because they braise then fry the pork belly, it is tender and juicy while crispy! The rice and beans are a lovely pairing with it. And the pikliz (spicy coleslaw) provides an amazing sharp vinegary spice to contrast the savoury umami notes of the dish! The Turkey Creole Stew is misleadingly full of flavour. It is hearty with a generous portion of turkey along with the fried plantains and the spicy slaw. To wash it all down, I recommend getting the passion fruit drink as a sweet refreshing contrast! Chef Patricia was doing double duty as front and back of house. No easy task to manage! She made our table feel welcomed and took lovely care of us to explain the dishes to us. The dine-in area is very much set up as a banquet event space. I rather enjoyed the larger tables - especially since our table shared numerous dishes together. This will be a return place for me to try other dishes! I'll update this review when I return!

Kizin Creole is the best Haitian restaurant in Chicago! One of your classic Haitian cuisine serving restaurants. The food here is to absolutely die for you. There are so many options to choose from that, this will allow you to try every dish on the menu. They have the classic white rice with black beans in the side, diri djon djon, brown rice and red beans. All made so fresh and delicious to eat. They have many options from griot, kabrit, turkey, chicken sauce and fried. All are fresh and clean, seasoned to perfection and cooked with love. With delicious plantains on the side with some spicy pikliz. You can add your classic Caribbean sodas, lemonade or passion fruit as well. They also have Soup Joumou every New Year and it’s so delicious!! They also have Bouyon! Another great traditional Haitian soup. With it being winter time now is a great time to go to Kizin and grab some Bouyon. It’s so rich with great flavors and they definitely serve it to perfection. I have a huge appetite so I’d order two if I were you. You’ll feel that Haitian pride after taking a sip of this fantastic soup! Patricia one of the owners is so amazing and very caring loving women and also her husband! I love coming here it’s home and they are family! The food here is truly to die for and you won’t be disappointed. Customer service is wonderful here and the owners and staff are all very respectful and welcoming.

Kizin Creole is fun spot to try Haitian food - get the delicious Haitian Patty.

Don’t think I’ve ever eaten Haitian food before so this was a treat to try out. We can’t travel and can’t BBQ as much with friends, but we are lucky that Chicago offers so much diverse food.

The key dishes were the Griyo (deep-fried pork shoulder) and the Haitian Patty (awesome).

Griyo - Of course this was good (read description above). I pulled off Griyo chunks to dunk in a delicious salsa sauce that came with it. So many dunks. Also comes with choice of rice - I tried the black mushroom rice (no mushrooms in it) but heard the recommended side is red beans and rice.

The Haitian Patty - Wowoweewa! My friend was adamant that I try these. SO GOOD! I’m so glad I got four of these but was also sad I only got four of these. They remind me of a ham and cheese croissant but they eat more like a spanikopita. Buttery, flaky, and the beef filling was so tasty. These are a must try and come with other meat fillings - collect them all now.

Be warned the Haitian Patty wasn’t on the pickup menu. I had to call to order them. Also, Haitian Patties go fast - I called at 5pm and they were sold out.

Pikliz = Haitian Kimchi (closer to spicy cole slaw or the white kimchi they’re using at...
