God bless the entire front of house staff at Weiss' Gasthaus Restaurant in South Bend Indiana.
My kids LOST IT just as we arrived in what is now the most embarrassing moment of my parenting to date and the staff SHOWED UP for me.
As my children screamed and kicked and climbed, they took turns bringing us coloring pages, fresh milk from the deli shop, TWO SEPARATE MEALS my kids did not eat and an entire basket of rolls just for my daughter after my husband took a single bite of her roll.
They cleaned spilled water as Mabel SCREAMED about her now ruined coloring sheet. Then they brought her TWO replacement pages, going as far as printing her a unicorn page special so she would finally calm down, stop sobbing, and try to eat. They assuaged my guilt and frustration when both meals they rushed to us were met with âTOO SPICYâ from a 3yo who did not even put them in his mouth. And they cheered the âvictoryâ when both kids finally agreed to at least eat some french fries.
Then they came around to praise my daughterâs coloring, and my sonâs smile. They doted and distracted them. One even grabbed my drink just as it was about to take the brundt of a shoved-away plate of âtoo spicyâ applesauce. Woman after woman kept asking how they could help or brainstormed ideas themselves, working as one large team to help get me and my husband fed.
And most importantly, every time I apologized or seemed close to tears, they reassured me that they had kids, theyâd done road trips, and I was not a monster for existing with some overwhelmed kids in a public place.
Also, the schnitzel was FANTASTIC. Seriously. Iâll remember this whole...
Read moreCalled ahead to make a reservation for the Sunday Brunch since we live in Blair Hills in Mishawaka. We are in our 70âs with physical disabilities & upon arrival the handicapped parking is in the rear of the building & very difficult to walk on the wavy surfaces. Upon entering the NON-ADA compliant restaurant I asked where the restroom was. The restroom was about 6â by 5â & had no ADA bars to assist us. Enough about that!
Then I went to sit down & my wife informed me it was a BREAKFAST only brunch served a la cart. Where we moved from in Iowa a brunch is part breakfast & part lunch, but not here.
We ordered 2 of the omelette options. While waiting we were given room temperature water & 2 dried out rolls with a nasty tasting jelly. When the food arrived it looked like a 2 egg omelette & what looked like cubed potatoes. The barely warm omelettes tasted like dill pickle juice & the potatoes looked like potato salad without the mustard etc. plus they werenât even warm like the potatoes we were used to eating at the Amana Colonies in Iowa which is known for the German family style eating experience in the 7 villages.
We did have a friendly waitress that kept checking on us but never did ask how the food was. My wife doesnât like conflict so we just paid the bill and left with $35.00 less in our pocket.
The only thing I saw GERMAN was the cuckoo clocks and the pictures of the 2 old men smoking their pipes and a couple of loud tables next to us to not enjoy the dining experience at all.đ€Ź

Read moreMy husband and I visited the gasthaus and from the moment we stepped through the door we felt at home. The atmosphere is so homey and comfortable. We dined on the patio which was lovely on this warm day. Our server was amazing. She answered all of the questions we had and made some great recommendations. We started with the charcuterie board for two. This included a delicious fluffy pretzel, summer sausage, some fresh blueberries and their Haus mustard. It also included gooseberries which my husband and I have never had and fell instantly in love with. We also enjoyed a cup of the mushroom soup. This was creamy and chocked full of mushrooms. Sincerely one of the best mushroom soups I have ever had. For my entree I had their taste of gasthaus. This had two sausages their Bavarian brat and their smoked sausage, a beef roulade, a small schnitzel that was actually so big it had me wondering what a large one looked like. It was accompanied by spaetzle, sauerkraut, and red cabbage. This was a fantastic meal with a good taste of what they offer. My husband had their Friday sauerbraten special with fork tender brisket in a ginger sauce and a side of spaetzle. The quality of ingredients shines through these dishes and the love of the chef is apparent in every bite. We were so stuffed we got our desserts, a lemon blueberry cake slice and a black forest slice to go. As good as the food was the service was even better. I've never felt so welcome at a restaurant. Thank you Weiss gasthaus for an unforgettable meal...
