I was completely blown away from the moment we walked in until the moment we left. The was my first trip to Monkey 68 and I'll do my best to bring everyone in the area for a visit as well. My review is lengthy but I think every detail is worth mentioning for this spot.
The first thing you see upon entry is an alluring floor-to-ceiling bar. This would definitely be a great spot if even just for drinks with friends. The cocktail menu was designed with the Chinese Zodiac in mind, and spans an array of flavors like absinthe, elderflower, aperol, pamplemousse rose, and more. Mouse in the Muse was the table favorite but we tried maybe 6 different options. We even watched the bartender pour a drink with smoke billowing from the glass as an added touch. The attention to detail here is remarkable.
When seated we were told this is a tapas-style restaurant offering both small and large plates. The options all sounded so great but we widdled it down to the pan-seared dumplings, asparagus fries with truffle aioli, Angry Ribs, and Bang Bang Shrimp to start. My friends then ordered the KFC Bowl and a tuna-based sushi roll, Twilight. The dumplings had a really great crispy sear to them and the Angry Ribs fell off the bone. Everything was amazing, but I'm still dreaming of the latter two specifically.
The owner (or manager on duty) came by and asked how we heard about the new restaurant, how our experience was so far, what we typically enjoy, etc. - all great questions someone would ask if truly invested in customer satisfaction. I told him everything was amazing but also explained I'm not too adventurous with sushi. He very politely brought over a Gaelic roll and challenged me to try it. Between how he treated us and how wonderful the flavors and textures blended, I think I've converted to a sushi lover.
Overall, the ambience is great, the staff is very polite and attentive, and every single bite of food was absolutely delicious. I love a creative drink menu and that was an added kicker to make this my new favorite spot in town. I can't wait to go back. My friends and I have been texting about our next...
Read moreTook my 10yr old son there last night 1/13 so he could try what good sushi was like. He's been a huge sashimi fan for years, but I wanted hm to try some better than Chin Chin, Publix, ect... My wife and i have done Monkey several times and always loved it. This time was no different, hit the Sashimi platter for my kiddo, smoked Toro, ect... He was just a little more hungry atthe end so we decided to do a couple Nigiri's of Salmon. The waiter asked if we wanted to try Salmon Nigiri fro the belly. I said sure guessing it would be a few bucks more. Well, it was $27 for 2 pieces All was great, I paid and we left. I noticed on the way home that I was charged for a Sushi/Sashmi platter for $27. We didnt order that, so I went back to correct. Here's where it goes sideways. I was told that was the 2 piece Salmon belly nigiri. Sooooo the standard nigiri was $9, and the two piece belly salmon was $27. I looked at the waiter and owner and said, next time, it would be wise to tell the patron that it's an extra $18 for 2 piece of belly meat. Also, considering we didnt have an al a cart menu with us, I couldnt have know the large price difference. With tip it was @$162. It's really not the money, I just feel like that was a bit shady...
Read moreGreat food, great atmosphere, bartenders and waitresses did a great job, and I'll never go there again. I chose this place for my wife's birthday and let them know ahead of time. They took note of it and they did nothing. I wasn't looking for a song & dance, freebies, drinks, or anything, just some recognition of the Birthday. We ordered a great meal and at the end when we got the tab I told the manager that I expected more. I said it was my wife's birthday and he looked at the computer and said, "Yeah, there is a note here that it is her birthday, but we don't do that here." I asked him what he meant by "we don't do that here" and he said "we don't do Birthday songs here." I told him, "I don't expect a Birthday song, I agree with you there, but how about some recognition of her Birthday, you have it noted in your computer, its the one birthday night of the year for her and we chose your restaurant." His response was a flat, "we just don't do that here." Very pretentious attitude for a restaurant. I can have great food at home, we were out for a celebration and I could have chosen a thousand other places as good or better than Monkey 68 that would have recognized a birthday and added to the celebration and...
