I was starving by the time I went to the food court at Lakeline Mall on Saturday. STARVING. Looking around at food options, nothing looked that great, and it was all the same stuff. I almost missed A Taste of Hungary! Once I saw the pictures I was sold.
I ordered the mini Langos with guacamole on top, and of course I was getting the spiral potato. Omg it was amazing. I can say without a shadow of doubt that I had the best fried bread I have ever had in my entire life. It doesn't look like anything special, right? It looked like a super simple light lunch that I could enjoy.
I took my first bite and I swear to you there had to have been hearts in my eyes. I was absolutely blown away at the texture of the bread. The inside of the bread was very very soft and fluffy chewy similar to a freshly fried donut. The exterior was perfectly fried to a crispy perfection that was amazing when combined with the warm fluffy chewy soft center. The guacamole was perfectly seasoned with very very simple things inside. Just a few small pieces of shallot, some lime, tomato on top and it was perfect. What really blew me away about the bread was that it was so clean. Not greasy, not oily to the touch, just absolutely perfectly cooked. You know how sometimes when you get something fried you have to hurry and eat it before it gets soggy? Not in this case. I was able to slowly savor every single bite and every single bite was the perfect texture.
Now, let's talk about that potato. Perfectly spaced, perfectly fried, no grease, no dripping oil, cooked to absolute perfection. I had forgotten to ask when I placed the order if the potato came with some kind of sauce, so I didn't know what to expect. It turned out it did not come with a sauce, it was sprinkled evenly with a wonderful spice. I wish I could identify it for you. The best I can describe is it was a really good seasoned salt, with a spice that I can't quite identify. It was not overly spicy it was perfect. I offered a taste to my family members sitting with me at the food court, and boy was that a mistake. They ended up eating more than half of it and they felt absolutely no guilt whatsoever.
The super nice lady who took my order at the counter was just such a beautiful person. It's not very often that I have something nice to say about the people in the food court, but she definitely is rated 10 full stars. She made me feel like I walked into her kitchen and was going to cook something special just for me. Like I was home. Definitely a full five...
Read moreFirst, oh my gosh!!! Ok, now that that is out of the way.... My grandmother came to America from Hungary In 1909 through Ellis island. She would cook the most amazing meals. She passed down the recipes to my mother, who made it for me. Unfortunately they have both passed on years ago. The closest I could get to some favorite recipes was at german restaurants. They were close, but not the same. Today we were visiting the round rock outlets for the first time and found this amazing truck. I was skeptical, but after talking with the sweet old lady I decided to try the beef stew with noodles. She said she made the noodles herself that morning. I again was skeptical, but I asked for an order to go to have for dinner later that night. I got my order and we continued on our way with shopping. My family was taking foreeevvver and I couldn't resist the smell anymore. I sat down with the intention to just take a bite. 10 minutes later it was gone. The noodles were in fact fresh. The stew was in fact homemade. The meat and the sauce and the noodles melded together like a beautiful symphony. I was brought back to my grandmother's kitchen. I went back and ordered another stew, an order of stuffed cabbage, and a strudel for tomorr.... Well, maybe tomorrow, it's still early. Thank you for bringing this amazing, authentic, home made Hungarian food to me. My grandma, mom and belly are smiling right now.
Fantasztikus szakács...
Read moreWe have been searching for authentic Hungarian food in Houston for a long time without luck. When we heard that there was a Hungarian food truck in Round Rock at the outlet mall we had to make a road trip to try it out. I have ties to Hungary, visited multiple times and know what Hungarian food should taste like. This food truck is the real deal. We tried the traditional lángos (a deep fried flat bread with toppings a Hungarian street food staple), it is exactly as it should be, it was delicious and huge and the dough was perfect. In Hungary the best lángos makers keep their dough recipes a secret. We also tried the spirál krumpli ( spiral potatoes). It was also 5 stars. Finally we ordered some dessert zserbó ( delicious layered cake with an apricot walnut filling, covered in thin chocolate glaze) and mákos guba (a sweet poppy seed-based bread dessert) with retro kávé ( a wonderful strong espresso served with whipped cream). We also took home several links of traditional Hungarian sausage. The food truck was decorated with typical Hungarian folk motifs, the radio was playing Hungarian music we felt like we were in Hungary. The owners are wonderful kind people from Hungary and will definitely make you feel welcomed. The food and experience is definitely...
