This review is based on their Galbi Jjim. Ok, now I've eaten Galbi Jjim many times before. It's a sweet and savory braised short rib with morsels of potatoes and carrots. This is wanna be galbi jjim especially when you add cheese and hot chili flakes. In the past most Korean restaurants made korean food to please the palates of koreans, but now when you add the cheese and chili flakes, it makes it not as authentic, to each his own i guess. The flavor was off for an authentic galibi jjim. It's a rip you off for the amount of meat you get especially for the price they charge! First of all, galbi jjim should be full of mostly meat usually without the bones because when it's cooked properly, the meat should literally fall off the bones. This dish should contain about 95% meat with maybe a healthy amount of potatoes and carrots thrown in there. What they do there, is give you 95% fillers with about less than 5% meat. Short rib meat has alot of fat so you have to braise it slow and low for hours to get the fat to render down and make it edible. If it's done right, you get a glorious pieces of meat that melts in your mouth. What they do there is completely opposite of what you're suppose to do. They don't take the time to cook it down properly. You can also tell by sampling a piece of potato which should taste like a nugget of mashed potatoes and not a hard uncooked potato. If you're not gonna do it right, then don't do it all all! I've never seen a galbi jiim with some many bones either. What they do there is, literally cut off all the meat from the bones and all you're left with tiny little bits of hard gristle on the sides of the bones. They threw in a few pieces of meat that was cut up into small thin slices and that wasn't from the short rib meat but a cheaper fatty cut?! It wasn't edible at all. We paid around $70 bucks for bones and fillers in a weird sauce that made it even more disgusting. This place has ruined a...
Read moreFinally was able to try this place, after have it on my list over 2 years. I would like to say that it is pretty good… but this place is expensive. I believe I would come to try their Galbi Jjim at least once, but not sure if I would come back, unless I was craving Sulung Tang Beef for a lighter meal when it’s cold or if someone was sick …
The Infamous Galbi Jim, it was pretty good… but not sure if it is $80 good. To top it off if you want the burnt Mozzarella cheese, it will cost you an extra six dollars. The beef was delicious, and inside there was rice cake, potato, carrots, and smaller slices of beef. Again not sure if I would pay that much, maybe $50, but $80 …
The Sulung Beef was just like I would imagine it. Nice and clear, with some dipping sauce. We had to make sure we ask for the salt and green onion.
This Sulung dish, plus the Galbi Jjim added together over $100 already, plus if you decide to dine in, well 15% tip, you can do the math…
I do have to note that their BanChan was pretty good. They had three different ones, a green onion, radish, and traditional kimchi.
I’m glad I finally was able to try this place, but my wallet wasn’t. Like I said before, if you haven’t tried this, I would recommend eat least you try it once. Either way for me, if I come back, it would most likely be a rainy or sick day. Thanks for reading till the end,...
Read moreFood-ill preface by saying I only had the galbi jjim so my review is only regarding that dish.
The sauce was good, sides were meager but tasted fine. my real and only gripe is with the meat quality that came out.
If you Google galbi jjim you will notice that on the bone there is a nice chunk of meat which should be oh so tender and full of flavor from being in the sauce. I have been eating galbi jjim for 40 years and this is how it always is whether it was from my Grandma's kitchen or a restaurant in Seoul.
What I got was the total opposite it's like when I do the cooking and I cut off all the good parts from the bone and then all that's left is the chewy leftovers that I give to my dog. The entire plate was that. Now I know some people enjoy gnawing on the bone and working for that tiny bit of meat and if that's your thing then this is a place for you.
For a 100 dollars I expected a little more. I mean charge 200 dollars and do it right, I don't care about price just don't waste my time
My wife tells me that this is on the list of 101 places to eat when visiting LA? More like a list of 101 places to avoid.
And now the good..
Service was excellent, very fast and attentive no complaints there.
The atmosphere is average, seems clean, neat and tidy no frills. The mens bathroom did however smell...
