This shop is in ocean mart, and ran by a very sweet Japanese lady who I presume owns the stall. The food is made to order by her, and tastes like your Japanese mother cooked it. Food made with love
Onigiri: 4.2/5: For $8.50, you get 2 onigiri of choice. I opted with tuna mayo and umeboshi (plum). The onigiri are made fresh to order and are well packed with filling. The tuna is well seasoned, so it goes well with the rice. For those who haven’t tried umeboshi, it’s very sour, but I love it. The lady puts one on top and two in the middle, so there’s plenty of ume to go around. The only knock is that it falls apart after a couple of bites. I think they use regular jasmine rice for it.
Shogayaki 5/5: This one of the most comforting dishes I’ve ever had. Marinated, thinly sliced pork belly on a bed of rice. The pork has a similar flavor profile to gyudon, but has a warm ginger taste. She also adds a good amount of green onion on top that cuts the fattiness of the pork. The sauce also penetrates the rice under the pork, so the rice gets really flavorful as well. The portion is also enormous. As a certified big back (got my membership card and everything), it will make you full.

Read moreOkan Japanese Treats is a local restaurant in the food court of Ocean Mart in Roy that I have come to love. They serve a variety of Japanese dishes, including curry, karaage, bento boxes, and treats like mochi and cakes. I particularly enjoy the kids' bento box, as it comes in a cute container and offers the perfect portion (for me, since I get full quickly). It includes rice, tamago, karaage, edamame, potato salad, and a jelly. If you love Japanese food or are curious to try authentic Japanese cuisine, definitely stop by! While the prices are a bit higher for a food court, the food is of high quality, the portions are generous, and it's absolutely delicious. I'm so glad Ocean Mart has Okan in their food court—it's the perfect way to start your grocery...
Read moreI have always loved the food cafeteria in Roy’s Ocean Mart, but boy have I been excited to try Okan when it opened. I am above the moon! The Obento Karaage was so delicious! Every aspect was well thought out, from the presentation of the perfectly crisp chicken thighs, all juicy and flavorful…. To the pickled vegetables and yummy japanese themed potato salad, and not to mention the rice, so yummy paired with the chicken. Last but not least, I ordered a strawberry fruit mochi…. It was so delicious, I exclaimed out loud when I found the whole strawberry inside that delectable cream, that is covered with this perfectly kneeded strawberry mochi dough. 10/10, you must...
