One Sunday morning, I finally had the chance to stop by a coffee shop I’d been meaning to try for quite some time. From the outside, it had the appearance of a unique, family-run business, with a certain charm that drew me in.
As someone who always carries a thermos mug, I walked in with my mug in hand and asked if they could fill it instead of using a paper cup, which I find poorly insulated. At the counter, a young, seemingly "new-age" woman informed me that they could only serve 16 ounces and could not fill my mug completely.
This attitude struck me as rather off-putting. It felt as though she was implying, "You're trying to cut corners and get more for less, but we’re not falling for it." The truth is, I had no idea how much they charged for their coffee, nor did I care. I offered to pay extra to have my mug completely filled, but she gave me a fake smile and went through the motions.
I planned to sit down, enjoy my coffee, and have a bite to eat. I ordered a spinach and feta quiche, and she asked if I wanted it warmed up. I said yes. The total for the coffee and quiche was about $11. For reasons I still can’t quite understand, I even left a tip – something I now deeply regret.
After picking up my coffee from the counter, I sat at a table. A couple of minutes later, I noticed my quiche sitting on the counter. Despite the fact that there were three women and one man working behind the counter – one of whom was engrossed in their phone – no one thought to bring it over to me, even though there were barely any customers around. The quiche had just been left there for me to fetch.
When I picked it up, I realized I had made a mistake asking them to warm it up. Instead of using an oven, they had microwaved it for too long, which ruined the texture and taste. The once crisp and flavorful quiche had turned soft and unappetizing. Frustrated, I quickly finished my food, took my coffee, and left.
Throughout the experience, the staff lacked warmth or professionalism. They neither greeted me warmly when I entered nor acknowledged me as I left. For a place with four staff members and only one customer at that moment, their indifference was glaring.
I will never set foot in this pretentious, self-important establishment again. Spending $14–$15 at a nearby Panera Bread would have been a far better choice. At least there, the service is more professional, the food is better, and the prices are reasonable.
And to the coffee shop staff: Yes, you’re so clever for refusing to serve anyone more than 16 ounces of coffee, aren’t you? Be sure to keep a close watch – heaven forbid someone comes in with a large mug and “scams” you out of a few extra...
Read moreThe food menu is only available for a limited time, which I did not notice was posted on their website nor printed anywhere on the menu. I was disappointed when I realized that everything I came there for was already sold out for the day. I am not on a gluten free requirement, but I had received a cold gluten free chocolate chip muffin as a substitute for the blueberry muffin I had ordered. That order was already a substitute for the chorizo breakfast burrito that I wanted in the first place. That gluten free muffin probably could have served someone else better. At the end of the day, I spent $12 on a beautiful looking drink and a muffin that I did not finish either of because I was interested in trying something new and getting out of my comfort zone. I do not order a matcha latte very often, and I thought it would go well as a pallet cleanser for a spicy burrito. The rose colored glasses came off when my pleasing planned pairing came toppling down as I made snap judgment decisions rather than simply thanking the nice and informative barista for explaining to me their limited menu availability hours, then turning around. Hindsight is always 20/20, and had I the abilities to change the past, I probably would have gotten a snack at the gas station on the corner - as for this coffee store - past it by. I was definitely Lucky for the learning experience, and my toll spent will act as a deterrent reminder. I also appreciated the outdoor seating. With spring coming in, and the weather changing for the year, it would definitely be nice to see this place do something about the dead plants they have potted outside of the building. Just because the location is right next to a tire shop and a highway doesn't mean an independent small business can not hold steadfast a green trend. In fact, with Woodward and the stoplight next to the building, adding more green would definitely be eye-catching for commuters! As the place stands, I can encapsulate my entire experience in one word. The popular internet slang "mid" comes to mind. However, "mid" almost holds the implication that my experience was, "middle of the road", or something in between good and bad. Something even closer would be the term, "meh" popularized by the American animated sitcom The Simpsons. Certainly the experience did not ruin my day, but I was notably...
Read moreI visited Lucky Detroit on a bustling morning to redeem my complimentary breakfast as part of a an event, and it was an absolute delight! Despite the morning rush, the atmosphere was welcoming and vibrant. The ordering process was straightforward: place your order at the front, then find a seat and wait until your name is called.
The café boasts a cozy seating area with free Wi-Fi, making it an ideal spot for both quick bites and relaxed dining. The abundance of indoor plants added a refreshing touch to the ambiance. One of the highlights for me was the large glass windows that let in so much natural light. You'll find people working on laptops or just enjoying a peaceful morning.
I was specifically looking for a vegetarian option and had been eyeing their open-face avocado toast , it did not disappoint! I ordered the avocado toast along with a Nutella latte. I wasn't hungry right away, so I opened the box just to take some pictures. However, the enticing aroma that hit immediately was irresistible. The avocado toast turned out to be one of the best I've ever had. Each bite was bursting with flavor and freshness. Even hours later, the taste lingered delightfully. The Nutella latte was absolutely spot on! It was perfectly crafted, striking the right balance of sweetness and richness.
One unique aspect of Lucky Detroit is their commitment to quality. They roast their beans locally and craft their syrups in-house, ensuring each drink is fresh and flavorful. The menu changes seasonally, reflecting their dedication to using the freshest ingredients .
This is situated next to Belle Tire. Parking is somewhat limited, and the entrance operates as a one-way, enter from one side and exit from the other so plan accordingly. Nonetheless, the overall experience...
