Woodward Corner has the feel of a neighbourhood supermarket backed by a familiar Michigan big-box grocer (Meijer).
Attention to detail really counts here for a brand new shop, integrating a comfortable shopping environment. You won't find an overabundance of fluorescent lightbulbs buzzing away in a sterile white environment. Dark wood and warm lighting creates a comfortable ambiance. Some of the aisles do feel a bit narrow to navigate with a cart, but it's the sort of place you come with a basket to pick up the essentials for the evening meal, comparable to European or New York shopping experiences.
Obviously as a brand new construction, everything is glossy and fresh. The layout directs you towards an enormous cafe upon entry, complete with tables featuring USB chargers. (Thank you!) The minimal bakery selection features a lot of Michigan notables, ranging from the Avalon Bread Company to a scone company local to Berkley. You'll find more regular sliced breads and hamburger buns in another aisle at a lower price point, advantageous for those who might wonder why they can see a bag of mini pitas, but not a presliced whole wheat loaf.
The produce section is better than the Royal Oak Meijer, where I find most of the veggies and fruits go off within a day or two. I've exclusively looked for produce elsewhere unless using it that day for a meal. The appearance of the produce here is lovely, though I can't speak to duration yet. Keep an eye out for sales, as the sales ticketing is much subtler than a regular store. The same goes for finding the Meijer brand among the other name brands; it can be tough to spot that sour cream or yoghurt.
The smaller footprint of this space prevents it from carrying every flavour or option under the sun. That's actually helpful. The selection in the frozen, refrigerated, and preprocessed/boxed foods areas is still good, with most popular options available. Gems hidden among the regular cheese or frozen foods can include lesser known brands, and some real delights. We've had a great time finding these, including some gluten-free garlic and cheese "bread" balls and a delicious cheese that's new.
I like that the market requires reusable bags and supplies them inexpensively as encouragement to change our shopping habits. Less plastic is a win. There's a huge checkout area with self checkouts, including 'mini' checkouts for small orders and longer checkouts for the larger ones. At peak times, I've seen employees helping to navigate traffic through the...
Read moreI was impressed with his store and it definitely fits the area but it's not a Meijer...its better match to "Woodward corner market"...you can definitely see that there are Meijer brand item but the major component of a successful Meijer is their reward program and the cost savings they provide. This Meijer is more like a giant convenience store because everything is marked at retail price...There is literally nothing on sale with the exception of items that are going to be passed due...now to me the passed due items present a major strength and since the store isn't doing as well as they had expected I get to cash in on the "manager specials"... For example I got over $70 worth of fruit and vegetables today for about $20. The other thing I really like about this store is the local distributors...I bought some chunk nibbles today after companies owner I would say they're actually Priced Right for somebody that is okay with an Impulse Buy but wants a healthy but tasty treat at the same time also he said it helps out with Charity which sure that's a good marketing tactic but I'm more or less bought it because it's actually a good product and I like that they're headquartered out of Troy Michigan check the end of my review for photos UPDATE: I ate the 16oz bag of Chunk Nibblers in 24 hrs. The other company I tried it called Curry fresh they have the last two doors on the left side of the first aisle I think they're fresh Indian food taste really good and it wasn't too salty there's also a photo of that...
Read moreHurts to give this store 2* since most aspects of the establishment are GOOD. Fresh produce, fair pricing, friendly workers. But what’s terrible is their self-checkout system. I invariably get a glitch with an “unknown item” even though it’s always a common item with a clear barcode. This stalls the entire process and it must be cleared by a Meijer employee with a login. It happened again tonight and I was the first person of 8 different checkouts to experience it. But because the checkout attendant/helper was on the far side of the area, 5 other customers also had issues and got helped before me despite my issue occurring long before theirs. The poor Meijer employee was so exasperated by the time they got to me that she was clearly angry with the situation and in turn me, because I told her I felt slighted by all the other folks getting helped first. She said, “As you can see, I’m the only person working here right now.” in a very stern tone. My heart went out to her, but she had zero sympathy for my being helped dead last and that kinda put me off. I know this sounds nit-picky, but she really should have taken stock of who had problems first, which she didn’t. No one’s perfect, as I’m sure not, but this lady was working in an area not suited for her. I greatly dislike all self checkouts for reasons like this. This store is above...
