Monty's is one of those old school diners that define "hole in the wall." But the regulars are in on the secret, and now you can be too: the place is amazing.
I went for breakfast but the burgers here embody the best of an old fry-up with juicy, delicious patties on a nice bun. No special bells or whistles are needed to accentuate a tummy-filling meal produced with aplomb by the cook and the extremely kind staff.
Their fries cause seagull fights among grown men. Be forewarned, they are addictive and diet-busting, just perfectly crisp and delicious.
The omelets here embody fluffy, large creations produced with care and lots of eggs. The Irish Omelet and Western Omelet both feature loads of veggies buried like jewels among the golden, pillowy eggs. However, if you go with the corned beef omelet, you will be transported to a place where calories don't matter and the meat honestly melts on your tongue in a way that's sublime. Simple food prepared well is an art - a hard one to master, and absolutely worth it when you find it. The menu here on the chalkboards tells you they're skilled at what they do.
Be aware the regular crowd knows when it's busy and the place can seat 20 tops, mostly at the two-top tables or the counter. This is NOT a place for large groups unless you plan to sit outside on the sidewalk or get carryout. Pickup if you live in the area and don't want a wait.
However, the service is old school from an awesome Albanian family who remember people's names and faces in the best way. It's an endearing experience to hear the older adults talking to one another, catching up on their weeks, or newcomers (or high schoolers from Shrine, etc) getting caught into the mix. This place has a community and it's really a...
Read moreTook my best friend for lunch a while back now… we went specifically because a band we like mentions “Monty’s grill” in one of their skits and honestly the place is attached to a motel, doesn’t look like it's gonna be absolutely amazing, also located in Detroit ..so I wasn’t anticipating much. However 😲 I was pleasantly surprised to find very friendly service, welcoming employees… and customers (regulars), and Omg the food was DELICIOUS!!!! We told them (staff and customers) we had drove from Dayton Ohio specifically to have lunch there and they seemed shocked lol and we encouraged them to make T-shirt’s (still would be 100% buy one or 2) overall it was a great damn time and I’d LOVE to stop by again one day! Thanks for lunch Monty! Ps- if in addition to the shirts y’all could add a Utah burger, cheese fries, and a coke as a meal and refer to it as ‘the usual’ I’d feel I helped accomplish something in my life. 🩶 if that ever happens please find a way to connect with me and lmk and I promise we’ll be back for...
Read moreLooked forward to eating breakfast there from all the reviews. Sat 9 am. Walked in sat down. Waited 15 minutes for woman owner to come and take order. She was tired and rude. Took order for coffee and breakfast and waited another 10 minutes for coffee. I took a sip and it was terrible. Literally the worst coffee I ever had. The breakfasts are made one at a time by her son. I guess during my visit they got slammed with a phone order of at least 4 breakfasts. My County Omlette and my wifes chicken pita came after 45 more minutes. oh well, 90 minutes of wait I didn't like but tried to understand but my complaint and the 1 star are for the quality of the food. Chicken Pita tasted like fish and my omlette was not worth eating let alone waiting an hour+ for. Im happy for the rest of you that think this place is a hidden gem but I won't be back ever. Update: I had intestinal issues a few hours...
