My husband and I went to La Cocina International Restaurant on 2-8-20 while staying in the Castillo Real Hotel, which the restaurant resides in. When we first arrived, we were told that if we did not have a reservation we would not be able to be served, but one of the waiters (possibly the manager or head waiter) told the gentleman to seat us anyway, so we were in luck because we had been driving all day and we were tired and hungry.
We ordered an appetizer of Crab Tostados, which were totally out of this world! I grew up in Maryland, so I am hesitant to order crab anywhere, as it's usually 75% bread and 25% crab at best. This was not only mostly crab meat, but it was seasoned perfectly and served on green plantains with the most wonderful lightly pickled onions on top - a unique and delicious combination.
For dinner we ordered Braised Beef Short Ribs and Pork Osso Bucco. Both dishes were perfectly prepared and indescribably delicious - so much so that I suspect the chef may be considered world class.
Another thing that I love that is surprising that more upscale restaurants don't do, is each course was served with clean silverware, which was brought on a little tray. There is really nothing more annoying than ordering an expensive meal and then having the server ask you if you want to keep your dirty fork or knife after you've used them to eat a preliminary course. So that was really a very nice surprise that they realize that this seemingly small amenity makes a world of difference in your dining experience and really brings a restaurant to the next level.
Our waitress was very sweet and competent and served perfectly.
Lastly, I will mention that although at first glance the prices are a tad on the high side, the amount of food they serve is really generous, so it's very fairly priced. We really didn't need the appetizer, although I'm really glad we did order it.
We've eaten out at quite a few restaurants all over the country, and this experience from service to meal was way up there. I would very highly recommend...

Read moreWe finally made it to La Cocina last night, maybe the last of St Augustine’s high end restaurants that we had not enjoyed. We met friends there and had a great experience and will definitely be back! It is on the top floor of the San Sabastion winery and offers wonderful views of the river and downtown St Aug. While it’s location is a little off the regular St Aug beaten path, it does allow them to offer plenty of free parking. It is also certainly walkable from St George Street if you wish.
We sat inside as it was still quite warm outside though we walked around the expansive patio area which looks like a great time and included an outside bar. Note that they do not offer liquor at this point but they have applied for a license. They have beer and wine plus several wine cocktails.
Zach was our server and was both knowledgeable and attentive. I asked him what his favorite items on the menu and he did not just name the most expensive items on the menu. In fact, one of his choices was the cheapest entree.
For drinks, my lovely wife chose a wine mojito while I elected for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc from the winery downstairs. Both were solid. The food really stood out. I had the pear salad which was simply phenomenal….one of my favorite salads ever…. No exaggeration! My wife chose the ceviche and our friends chose the minorcan salad and charcuterie board….all were delightful.
For entrees, I had the gambas which included several large and succulent shrimp with a wonderful array of mixed vegetables and a not too sweet purée. My wife elected for a second starter as her entree which was the pork belly. Our friends enjoyed the lamb chops and the chicken.
Overall, I highly recommend La Cocina. It is a great combination of high end food with unmatched views of beautiful...
