Read moreThird wave coffeehouse with eclectic ambiance, great coffee and friendly baristas, all in historic St. Charles.
When I travel to new cities, I seek out third wave coffee houses. Why third wave? Per Wiki: "The third wave of coffee refers to a current movement to produce high-quality coffee, and consider coffee as an artisanal foodstuff, like wine, rather than a commodity." That kind of says it all.
The coffee and milk-based espresso drinks are top tier here, though that's all I've tried. One amendment to that assessment is to not bother with their 1881 blend when ordering an espresso drink - it's a buck cheaper than their single source, but simply not worth the discount. The Guatemalan I had for several days was sweet, creamy and light, compared to the bitter, dark roasted 1881. Spend the extra dollar.
I've not had a chance to spend time at a table, but the vibe has been low key in the morning. The baristas are invariably friendly and chatty about your options, and it's really worth engaging in a conversation about what you like. They seem to know their stuff.
The coffee itself is pricey, even by third wave standards. That may be in part due to the fact that they're the only truly good coffeehouse in the area, and it may be what is probably an astronomical rent on Main St. Either way, be prepared to spend a dollar or two more than usual.
In short, I find myself driving past Starbucks every morning to come to Picasso's. Is that damning with faint praise? Considering Starbucks is the only real alternative I've found in St. Charles, no. Even compared to its spiritual kin in other cities, Picasso's...
Read moreVery rarely do I write a review right away and very rarely do I obtain a cup of coffee that I don't have to Doctor up; yet Picasso was so excellent on the latter that I'm doing the former.
Mid day break and needing a boost I strolled in. The lighting is very dark even during the day. There's ample seating that's not crowed and free Wi-Fi so it's the perfect place to get some work done. The pastry items are rather limited but the menu for espresso drinks is more than most coffee places and leaves one with lots of options. Whenever the option presents self, I always go with almond milk and they had it in abundance. I opted for the Mona snicker mocha with slightly less syrup than their recipe calls for.
A huge sigh of relief when I took my first sip. Yet before my first sip, the barista very pleasantly told me to let her know if I needed any alterations. At the first sip I gave her a thumbs up and I'll I had to do was stir my warm drink.
Picasso is centrally located within the new shopping and dining complex called The Streets of St. Charles. Right by wasabi sushi and two cute boutiques, Picasso makes it easy to grab a drink and stroll the area either while shopping, taking a break from work for a pick me up or after a workout or movie.
Whether you like hot drinks, cold drinks, bottled beverages, pastries or sandwiches; I would definitely suggest Picasso. They have winning customer service and even better offerings that'll keep anyone coming back. More so since they have a frequency rewards card and gift cards...
