Even though it’s been over 10 years, it’s true what they say — time is the master of everything. Give people enough time, and truth has a way of bubbling back up. Leonore restaurant may have moved to Salem, but bad habits don’t relocate that easily. The embezzlement charges may have disappeared after they paid up, but some of us still remember how things really worked.
Paychecks were rarely on time — unless you were one of the favorites, like the guy who could show up nearly an hour late and still get a pass. Meanwhile, others were chewed out for being two minutes behind. Staff were expected to go above and beyond, only to return in the morning to clean up after the owner’s late-night hangouts with his buddies — bottles and glasses left out like someone else’s problem.
And on the last day, when enough was enough, I watched my ex-girlfriend — who gave that job everything she had — stand her ground for two solid hours, arguing with a man who never once respected her effort. She deserved better. We all did.
Oh — and for what it’s worth, when the owner thinks he’s some kind of tiramisu master but needs someone to show him a photo from their trip to Italy just to understand what a real one looks like… yeah, that kind of tells you everything.

As you walk in the door, you’re greeted by the heavenly aroma of fresh-baked pizza, and the equally welcoming gentleman at the front who owns Leonore’s with his wife, i.e. the creator of the excellent food on offer. I love arepas but can never pass up good pizza, so we ordered both, and were thrilled that we did. The pizza crust was wonderfully airy and chewy, and the cheese and sauce both excellent. The arepa—a sliced, griddled corn cake stuffed with fillings—we had was just as good, with perfectly fried plantains and white cheese and perfectly-spiced black beans enfolded in a crispy, chewy package. We also ordered one of each of the desserts, as they all looked so amazing we couldn’t make up our minds, and we were glad we couldn’t, because they were all delightful as well. Salem is lucky to have such a great place in our little town. Go enjoy it...
Read moreThe menu had much more than pizza. My husband has celiac disease and must eat GF. It is difficult to find a place with a full page menu of gluten free items, especially outside of a town or city. We found Leonore Pizza for dinner. The Arepas, a Venezuelan dish, was delicious. There are various fillings sandwiched between cornbread shaped and baked like an English muffin. The shredded white chicken was served with tomato mayo on the side. Hubby liked it! I had a small Margherita. The crust was very good.Three pizza pies sizes are offered with practically any combination of toppings. The waitress was sweet person and helpful. We spoke to the owner for a bit. Very nice, hard working man, who is trying to find ways to make his store stand out in a strip center. This was a great find in a town we were passing through. It is a small place. It...
